I Don't think students need to use computers during school becuase when you save files you never know they could get lost or the computer could break.

Since my opponent gave an argument for his point of view in the first round, and there are only three rounds, I am guessing that was supposed to be his opening statement, in which case this round is not just for acceptance. I'm suppose to give my opening statement.

In tonight's debate* I am going to defend two basic contentions.

First, my opponent's argument for why students should not use computers during school is fallacious.

Second, students should use computers during school.

Although my opponent did not stipulate that I should bear the burden of proving the opposite of his claim, I am agreeing to assume that burden on myself anyway.

With regard to that first contention, my opponent said, "I Don't think students need to use computers during school becuase when you save files you never know they could get lost or the computer could break."

The problem with this argument is that it proves too much. If the mere fact that a person can lose a file or a computer can break is any reason for why they shouldn't use a computer, then nobody anywhere on earth should ever use a computer. But obviously that's absurd. Computers have many useful functions, and they have become so engrained in the worldwide economy that is it unreasonable to suppose that we should stop using them. So the premise my opponent basis his argument on is false. His argument, therefore, fails.

Now, regarding my second contention, I think students should use computers at school because: (a) computers have become essential in the worldwide economy, (b) using computers prepare students to compete and get along in the worldwide economy, (c) using computers will prepare students for college where they'll be required to use Word, Excel, and the internet, and (d) using computers will lift students out of the proverbial stone ages.

*I like to say "tonight's debate" just because it's fun.
