Dance is a sport. A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others. If you didnt know thats the definition of a sport. First of all dancing is involving physical exertion and skill, also in dance, you do compete against indivuals and other teams, therefore it's a sport. Second of all, im suprised you wouldnt consider dance a sport, considering you did ballet. We may not tackle each other or other physical contact, but yes we do compete against other teams and people. I researched football and baseball players had to take a dance class and they said it was one of the hardest things they have ever done. Dancers must have flexibity, balance, and control to be able to dance. This is way more than any other sport needs to have. Dance is a sport and it may not be like the other sports that involve physical contact, running up and down a court, dribbling a ball, tacking, gettin touchdowns, or hitting stuff over a net, but it most definetly is a sport that is quite harder than many other activities you would consider sports. !
Please don't get me wrong, I'm well aware that dancing takes a tremendous amount of not only natural skill, but also effort to be put into it. It's very tough, but it's not a sport. It's a performing art. Sports have a natural competitive nature. For example, take the competition out of baseball. What would it be? It couldn't be executed the same. Football? Same thing. If soccer had no competition, what would it be? If you take the competition out of competitive dance it is still dance. The only difference between competitive dance and dance is judges declaring winners. The whole point of a sport is to be competitive. Football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, and all other sports were established for one reason and one reason only--competition.
Dance is a sport. If you take the competiton out of dance, yes, there is no winner it's just dance. But really when you dont take a competiton out of baseball, its just hitting a ball with a bat, same with football, if you take the competition out of that, its just throwing around a ball, see where i'm going witth this ?
If you take the competition out of dance, it's still the same thing. It's a performing art that was intended to be entertainment for spectators. You're still doing the same thing, you just aren't being judged. Taking the competition out of baseball would be people playing catch, and taking batting practice. With football, it'd just be playing catch with a ball. There would be no touchdowns, goals, home runs, no nothing because you can't play what is considered to be baseball/football/basketball/hockey etc. without there being competition. But with dance, it still takes the same amount of strength/flexibility etc. whether or not you are being judged. It's not a game, it's not a race, so no clear winner can be determined from it. By the logic you're providing, you could make virtually anything a sport.
