Pro

I will be arguing that Dark Souls 2 is better than Dark Souls 1.

My opponent can start his argument in round 1 if he wishes.

Good luck.

Con

Acceptance: I accept. Although Pro has offered the chance to go first, I prefer not posting cases in the first round unless my opponent has done so himself. So I instead will allow Pro to go first.

Good Luck to Pro.

Pro

I must apologize to my opponent. Believe it or not, it was actually my friend who wanted to do this debate on my account, and he is unavailable to debate right now. Since I have 0 knowledge on Dark Souls, I would do a pretty poor job debating it anyways.

If there is another topic you want to debate, please message me.

Preface: Given Pros FF, this is largely unnecessary. However I’ve already had this written up and I can’t let it go to waste. I would suggest Pro have his friends post make their own account so as not to risk this in the past. I also ask Pro to tell his friend that if he still wants to do the debate, he can send me a debate request once he has some time.

Synopsis: The Resolution is “Dark Souls II is Better than Dark Souls I”. There is little that needs to be overviewed here. It is a better of objectivity however. Pro will need to show without a doubt that II is objectively better than I. There is no room to allow Subjectivity on Pros side.

Proposition I: Definitions

I shall go over a few definitions I view as necessary for the debate:

Better: Adj;

1: of superior quality or excellence {1}

2: higher in quality {2}

3: of a higher standard, or more suitable, pleasing, or effective than other things or people {3}

Objectivity: Adj;

1: not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts; unbiased: {4}

2: not influenced by personal beliefs or feelings; fair or real: {5}

Subjectivity: Adj;

1: pertaining to or characteristic of an individual; personal; individual: {6}

2: influenced by or based on personal beliefs or feelings, rather than based on facts: {7}

Proposition II: BoP and Requirements to Win

BoP will go to Pro, as he is making the claim. In order for Pro to win, he will need to be able to show that DS II is objectively better than DS I. It must be objectively show because he is making the absolute claim of superiority, not a relative claim. In order for me to win, I need not show DS I to be better, but instead to show that DS II cannot be determined to be objectively better.

Case I: Absolute Statistics

Thesis: Here I shall present some statistics to show that there is no gap of note between in favour of DS II between the games.

Rationalization: A quick look at some statistics. DSI has received a 89/100 on both PS III and XBox360 by Metacritic. {1} Metacritic gave DS II a 91/100 on both. {2} This is a gap of only two points. Even a tiny margin of error {3} would make this gap too close to ever gaige objective superiority. Famitsu ranks them both at 37/40, {4/5} IGN also ranks them equal at 9.0/10.0. {6/7} These are the major groups who have ranked both games. There are many who ranked one but not the other, and a close look shows them to largely be reviewed the same. This shows the games to be so closely tied as to prevent any support for one games superiority over the other on an objective level. Let’s look at another matter. Awards. DSI has received many Awards, including Game of the Year from multiple groups, Best Role playing Game, Best Action/Adventure, and many others. {8} DSII has received Game of the Year by a single group. Lastly, I point out that DS I maintains it’s allure, actually having it’s rating from EDGE increase from 9/10 to 10/10 {9}

Conclusion: I’ve shown here that these two games are scored so closely so as to prevent any true declaration of superiority on an objective level of one over the other.

Case II: Relativity of a Good Game

Thesis: I’ll discuss how games are a matter of Subjectivity, and cannot be objectively ranked.

Rationalization: How good a game is based off the player. One person might like a game which is near universally hated, yet hate a game which is near universally loved. This stretches past such minor matters as graphics. Though some people believe the value of a game if in how high it’s graphics are, many people (likely most) acknowledge that pretty pixels do not determine the true value of a game. It is the content, the gameplay, and the overall replay value which determines the true quality of a game. A game could have flawless graphics and never be picked up again after the first playthrough (if ever finished to begin with), while games with lower graphics are always fun. A good example is the original Marios. If you leave someone with the game, they will play it for hours. I personally would binge Mario 64. And it’s graphics don’t even compare to modern examples.

Conclusion: Simply put, by showing the flaws in assuming an objective superiority in the subjective matter of games, I show that Pro can never truly fulfill BoP, as he can never assert that one game is objectively better than another.

Epilogue: For all intents and purposes, this proved highly unnecessary given that Pro has optioned to Forfeit (for reasons he has listed), however I’ve still posted, as I already had this written, and I refused to let it go to waste. I thank Pro for the gracious Forfeiture (I suggest he be considered for Conduct due to it). In short there after, I have largely shown that the scores are too close to give a statistical superiority to one game over the other, and I have shown also that subjectivity makes it impossible to truly secure one game as “better” than another.
