Darth Vader is an accomplished duelist. Pre-suit Vader would throw himself into the battle. Darth Vader in his prime was after Revenge of the Sith. Although many would dispute these claims, I will list the reason why.
Lightsaber skills; Darth Vader was an extremely skilled duelist who excelled both in clone wars era and empire era. Darth Vader could top many of his rivals. Darth Vader was an intimidation expert. He would win the battle before it was won, by psychologically terrorizing them with his force powers. He would throw lightsabers long rage, and would end up crushing someone's arm if they displayed a sign of weakness.

Force Powers: Darth Vader was extremely skilled in force power. He is proven to be 8/10ths of what Darth Sidious was. Darth Vader would use the force to augment his physical strength. He would use the force to enter an opponent's mind, and terrorize them. General Grievous would by the way be vulnerable to all seeing that he has no real force shield. Vader also would use the force to throw his lightsaber with precision usually never missing. Vader is also shown being so powerful with the force that he would just grab a Jedi's lightsaber with the force. Darth Vader also was experienced with telekinesis. This ability was displayed in Empire Strikes Back. While Darth Vader was in a duel with Luke, he would start throwing objects at Luke with his mind. Another ability that is the most popular ability he has is force choke. Seeing as the fact that Mace Windu force choked Grievous, Vader could probably do it too.

Pain Tolerance-It is probably a fact by now that Vader would win Pain Tolerance. He could take lightsaber hits anywhere, and still go on with the fight. Luke hit him on the arm, and Vader would use his anger to just counter and heal himself. Although this does contain information from legends, but in force unleashed 2 Darth Vader takes multiple electric shots to his armor, and still goes on fighting.

Why Grievous would win against pre-suit Vader
  • He was comparatively well during the brawl against Obi Wan Kenobi, an opponent not even Anikan Skywalker could have defeated

  • Grievous's four lightsabers would throw off Anikan. Anikan, shown mutliple times to be characterized as hasty and easily distracted, would not likely be able to fend off the four sabers

  • Grievous possesses a large army, while Anikan usually is alone for his missions

  • Grievous is a robot, with more abilities than a human

Why Grievous would win against Darth Vader

  • Darth Vader's suit opens for more weakness, and Grievous, being a robot who was shown to have extreme accuracy, can easily destroy Vader's lifelines, thus killing him

Rebutals:
You talk about pain intolerance. Grievous is a robot, with no nervous system, thus, no feelings of pain.

You mention lightsaber skills. Grievous is capable of weilding four lightsabers, swinging mercilessly at his enemy. I would like to refer to Darth Vader's defeat and how Luke Skywalker, only weilding one lightsaber, swung relentlessly and violently at Vader. Vader, unable to predict or counter these attacks lost the fight. Grievous, a lightsaber dueler, with more experience than Vader of Skywalker (fighting since the clone wars), and having four lightsabers, can easily destroy Vader.

Back in the day when Vader had no suit, he was able to compete with Obi-Wan in lightsaber combat. But when Obi-Wan (who was close to Anakin's equal) fought the amphibian general himself, he cut two of Grievous' arms off like it was nothing. Prior to when Anakin got a suit, he gained force abilities and became more skilled with a lightsaber. If Grievous couldn't beat a guy who was equal to the prequel Vader, he definitely couldn't beat the sequel version.

Yea. I don't think GG could get anywhere close to Vader. Maul and GG could be a fun fight, blades only.

All Vader has to do is use the Force; i.e, choking and push. After all, Grievous still has to breathe.
