The 8th amendment states "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." The death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment. Therefore, it is unconstitutional and should be illegal.

accept.

Just saw a 750 character limit. Wish I would have not taken this now, but I will do the best to support this within the short amount of words we are allotted

I literally only have time for one contention because of the severely short character limit.

Contention 1

The death penalty acts as a deterrent for criminals who would other wise not be afraid of prison. There are many people who do not mind going to jail or receive the consequences of their actions, but when we insert a death penalty it puts a sense of fear into some criminals. Since it is often used as a way to kill someone after they have killed one or a few people. A study says this.

"A final report will likely be published later, but the initial statistics indicate the number of murders in the U.S. increased slightly by 1.5% from 2011 In states that did not have the death penalty, while states that have it showed a slight decrease"

If the state kills someone, how are they any different than the murderer?

Negative. It is not cruel and unusual punishment, it is a just punishment for a cruel and unusual offense. Murder.

Reasons for voting decision: Con simply failed to actually turn up so my vote goes to Pro - however, I'm still opposed to the death penalty.
