The death penalty could be used to kill people who haven't committed the crime. There has been some cases where they kill the man, then later come to find that he never committed the crime. In my opinion this solution is just far too permanent for something that may not be 100% sure.
Also, if there is a serious offence, an entire life imprisonment may not be enough to punish them, i.e if someone went on a rampage and killed a whole lot of people, and was caught, they should be made to pay- because the lives of the relatives of the victims should be taken into account.
The killer should not really been made to live- he should be punished for what he had done.
