The death penalty is wrong, . . . and the "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" argument is completely bogus, and therefore executing someone reiterates the killing one does in the first place.

With hope, you can make arguments in more than a short paragraph throughout the debate. I will use a couple of arguments to justify the death penalty.

First, you say "eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth argument is completely bogus." There is no reason why this is true. If you were to open your history book or even look at a comparisson of today's world to ancient civilizations, you will notice that civilizations that truly operated under the Code of Hammurabi actually had lower rates of crime and disorder because there was a stricter interpretation of the law than there is today. Punishments that are equitable to the crime help re-iderate the severity of the crimes that are perpetrated. You say executions reiderate the killing that takes place. So what? This allows for retribution of what was perpetrated. Now, I do not advocate outright murder, however if you have the gall to kill someone, the favor should be returned.

Second, prison overcrowding. We are forced to spend millions of tax dollars funding the lives of those who are forced to stay into prison until they die. A roof over your head and three square meals a day look pretty good to someone living in dire conditions, and poverty actually drives many to murder because they can survive living on the dime of the state and the taxpayers. Banning the death penalty increases the number of life sentences, which makes overcrowding worse and sucks up more tax dollars.

Third, we should televise executions. You may find in other posts I have made that televising executaions leads to a ban of the death penalty. However, if you are to televise executions, studies have shown that actually deters crime. This means if we show people how horrible the death penalty is, people will not commit violent crimes that result in death, which makes society better. If we can make examples out of these criminals (which you call "reideration of the killing") we can reduce the amount of crimes.

It is for these three reasons I believe the death penalty should remain in use.

The death penalty in itself is not right or wrong. It is simply a means to an end.

The end being the removal of the most dangerous individuals from society.

I think that as a means to an end it is potentially the most efficient.

My reservations with the death penalty are not with it, rather with the various justice systems around the world which enforce it.

I think it is foolish for death penalty opposers to argue against it on ethical grounds when clearly a much stronger argument can be made on the grounds that in many cases, the justice system has found not to be perfect and that there is no turning back from the death penalty.

Are you saying that if a murderer isn't put to death, an innocent person will be put to death? That is absurd.

I completely agree. What argument could even be given against this?
