Well, I'd like to thank my opponent for challenging me to this debate. Before I get started outlining my argument (since Swagjake has only barely started with his own, I will do the same), I'd like to clarify the debate, since i do think it's unclear from the information given.

What are we talking about? We're discussing the death penalty, and likely focusing on the United States in its usage. This is a policy of capital punishment, or "a legal process whereby a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime." As such, we're discussing its presence or absence in the policy of this country. As such, the burden is shared - it is Con's burden to support the death penalty and explain its benefits, and it is my duty to present reasons for it to end.

The topic says "Death penalty or not", though Con's position in this debate is obviously one of being Pro on death penalty. I'm not quite sure why there's a question mark at the end of that statement, but it seems to me that he thinks that life imprisonment is essentially like living rent free at a resort. I would contend that that's not anywhere near the reality, though I would rather he explained that argument (and, preferably, sourced it) before I rebut it.

My argument will come down to 3 basic points, each of which will then be expanded upon in subpoints.

The death penalty is wrong for justice.
- Classism and racism in convictions and trials
- Innocence and wrongful conviction
The death penalty does more harm than good to society at large.
- The value of rehabilitation
- Court clog and cost
The death penalty is inherently immoral.
- Cruel and unusual punishment
- The immorality of vengeance

I leave it to my opponent to initiate this debate more completely.

Well, Swagjake challenged me to this debate, though it appears he wasn't capable of posting his argument for one reason or another. I wish him well, though as he has not made his argument clear, I will abstain from putting in the effort to clarify mine.

WhiteFlame, You're so patient with shallow people. It's almost as if you don't think they're below you. I like in round 1 where you made it clear you were challenged, so people would know that you'd never actually lower yourself to debating that guy and are only doing it to humor him.

Don't take me to seriously, I'm just messing with you.

...Why am I mean, brickwall? And I think there are a number of ethical concerns with that, bluecookie.

Death isn't much of a punishment. We aren't sure if he/she will even suffer. No, make them live. Make them suffer. Use them for trials instead of innocent guinea pigs
