Debate (tell us why you are for or against): All human actions are ultimately self-serving and egotistical

Con

I assume that the first round is for acceptance, so I accept.

I will be using the term 'altruistic' in my constructive case, so here is a very good definition:
Altruistic: unselfishly concerned for or devoted to the welfare of others

I would like to see how this debate goes; this topic is indeed a good subject to debate. I am pro on the topic because I believe any time a person does something for someone else, the doer wants to get something out of it whether it be monetary payment or other tangible item, an appreciative "thank you" or praise, a good feeling inside (intrinsic motivation), or a bad feeling (which is still intrinsically motivated and could come from not getting exactly what he or she wanted in return). I do not believe people can show selfless concern, but I do believe they can demonstrate genuine concern. I will use myself for an example to better provide an idea of what I mean. I've always said that I will not date a police officer or fireman because I'd worry about him every time he goes to work. I would have a genuine concern for the well being of the man I love, but also, I am aware that I don't want to deal with the heartbreak I know I would experience if he was to get seriously hurt or worse on the job. Although this is not a selfless concern, my concern is a genuine. Nothing is selfless; we all want something even if we do not admit it for fear of looking bad.

interesting topic. I am excited to see what comes up in the subsequent rounds. 'Con' uses the word "altruistic" which is great, and has me thinking bc i am more pro on this topic. I do not feel there are many altruistic people, but i also do not think being on the side of "pro" is a bad thing. We ultimately want to be happy in this life, and to be selfish is healthy in my opinion. Not to the point of arrogance, but a healthy dose. Those that are self serving or egotistical can do better in life bc for the most part they have past the first tough hurdle; excepting themselves. My opinion may be swayed after seeing the rest of this debate, but so have at it you two. Cheers!
