Debate.org is superfluous if not detrimental, in the face of modern blogging technology.

Modern blogs have every function to be found in debate.org.

Modern Blogs have much greater flexibility with regard to formatting and character limit.

Modern blogs allow for much greater voting flexibility allowing for a much clearer picture of consensus.

Modern blogs reach a much larger audience.

Debate.org has already shown itself to be capable of censorship thus negating any sort of third party non partial peer review type advantage.

Modern blogs have multiple backup options.

Modern blogs increase in features almost daily, where as I'm still waiting on debate.org to be updated.

My argument:

Debate.org has something that blogging websites do not: it encourages logical debate as opposed to half-assed opinions and pointless flaming. Here, people are expected to actually back up their arguments. I only wish that debate.org would do a better job of weeding out those who post fake debates.

You could easily stipulate on the blog that the only replies that will pass moderation are those which conform to some level of logical rigor.

Besides, the debate.org voting system ends up being little more then a polling system anyway, and often times the question being asked by the poll isn't even related to the so called topic of the debate.

Many times people respond with their vote to the question of who is more attractive, or what did they already agree with. I've proved this in previous debates.

I think the overall flavor of the blog can encourage logical debate, well more than this page can. Not a lot of trolling of Richard Dawkins page, or the physics blogs.

While I do agree that this website could benefit from many changes, I still don't think that it is superfluous.

If a blog were made that was subject to such rules and moderation, wouldn't it just be another debate.org? Wouldn't THAT be superfluous?

"If a blog were made that was subject to such rules and moderation, wouldn't it just be another debate.org? Wouldn't THAT be superfluous?"

Not really. It's a matter of timing and flexibility.

Timing. Those blogs exist now and existed before debate.org.

Flexibility. With the proliferation of blogs, one can find one suited to their specific needs moderated or at least observed by people knowledgeable in the desired topic.

In this instance, as with the proliferation of open source software, more is better. Choice is handy.

Besides forums and blogs are generally personally owned, where as debate.org is corporate.

On the contrary, I have yet to find any website aside from debate.org that is for logical debate on any topic. I've tried to find one, too.

So until someone makes something better, I fail to see how debate.org is superfluous.

besergent wins easily. He made very good points actually, a lot of debates just turn into polls.

Christ, Bse... do you just dig and overreach as far as possible in order to gallantly express your invaluable viewpoint to the rest of the unsuspecting world? Don't worry buddy, even if nobody wants to listen to you go on and on, you enjoy it enough for everybody.

Yea, I've been focusing on my stumble account and blogspot.

I intend this to be my final debate here.

My biggest problem is the fact that I can't archive a debate and all it's comments on a single page.

And of course that the corporate bastards deleted one of my debates.

I've looked into joining other people's debates but either the owners are deleting everything interesting, or it wasn't there in the first place.

My latest work. Maybe the first in a series. Whatta ya think? (feel free to answer there instead of here)

Well spoken. In my view these flaws, along with multiple accounts, trollers, and the general lack of feedback that even the best debates suffer from cripples a lot of the more intelligent and creative voices I've seen.

For a laugh, sarge:) http://www.debate.org...
