The date 2012 has significant meaning and it is time to prepare for what could happen. The world and human race will end on December 21st 2012. Signs proving this will let me easily win this debate!

Thanks to my opponent for offering this rather unique debate.

December 21st, 2012 will be a Winter Solstice. I can think of no other significant astronomical or geological event likely to occur on that day that could bring about the end of the world.

Pro believes there are signs tat will easily prove that the world and the human race will end on December 21st, 2012. I would be interested in hearing about this alleged evidence. As it stands, there is not reason to assume that the world will end on December 21st, 2012, or any other particular date in the foreseeable future.

As for evidence there are numerous studies regarding the issue of 2012 I will give you some.

Evidence #1. Mayans really knew everything about astronomy, since their calendar consisted of 260-day periods, which we now know represents the true length of the solar year! According to the Mayan calendar, the "Great Cycle" equates with 5,125.36 years, which began on August 11, 3114 B.C. and ends in 2012. The Mayans foresaw an end of the world (as we know it) doomsday on December 21st 2012.

Evidence #2. Prophecies, now this is a very big topic due to the fact that so many prophets have predicted the end of the world in 2012. One of the most famous prophets: Nastradamus, also predicted the world to come to a significant change in 2012. He predicted a great comet, Nibiru, would impact the Mediterranean on December 21, 2012. He predicted the impact that 9-11 had on the world, the bubonic plague which devastated Europe, and he has predicted a world war 3. Now back to 2012, I am aware that something like a great comet would not kill ALL of civilization but there would be devastation and global chaos.

Okay so I gave you two pieces of evidence regarding culture and historical figures, now I will give you evidence from past devastation's, such as volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, and hurricanes.

Evidence #3. Hurricanes like Katrina that hit New Orleans in 2005 devastated the U.S. Could you even imagine the devastation that a super hurricane would do to the earth it would be a global devastation, and the economy would crumble. Now no one could foresee any type of hurricane this early on but come 2012 keep your eye out! Once a Hurricane is formed there is no destroying it!

Evidence #4 + #5. Recently a volcano erupted in Iceland and it caused planes to stop flight over that area, this caused millions of problems for both the companies that canceled their flights and for the people needing to get to work, home, and other various places! It is incredible that something as small as ash in the sky from one single (small) volcano can cause weeks of problems could you imagine if Yellowstone erupted? It would send the world into global chaos because they cant catch their flight, never mind an ice age because the sun cant come through the thick ash! Yellow Stone can erupt anytime it is the world only remaining super volcano its going to go off sometime.

Now lets forget about how fragile our earth is forget about the super-volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, pole shifts, earthquakes, lets forget about everything in the skies, comets, meteors for just one second and think about the possibilities as to what man can do to planet earth.

World War 3 would destroy the earth. Tension between countries would result in fighting and an outbreak in war. It wont just be guns and army men it will be worse, nuclear war resulting in abnormalities in unborn children, and casualties around the world. Man has created powerful tools which they should not have, tools that could destroy any society at any point in time. All it would take is for one nations government to say the word and boom a global impact more devastating than any gun!

Now opponent with so many ways for the earth and/ or its inhabitants to fall, and with the chances so high that SOMETHING could occur how on earth could you prove that nothing will happen?

I am going to go through my opponent's various proposed reasons for why the world will end in 2012 and explain why each of them fails to uphold this conclusion.

Evidence 1.

I would like to see cited evidence that the Mayans believed the world would end at the end of the Great Cycle. The word "cycle" itself seems to imply repetition, so there is no reason to assume the Mayans believed the world would end after their calendar ended. Even if they did believe this, it would be pretty irrational of them. Why should the world end just because a South American tribe that was fairly advanced in astronomy ended their calender on a certain date? Nothing in Mayan astronomy provides us with any reason to believe that the world will end at some point in the foreseeable future.

Evidence 2.

I would like to see cited evidence of Nostradamus' prophesies. As Con and the Contender it is not my responsibility to look up information that my opponent is vaguely referring to. In any case, there is no scientific evidence of any humans beings possessing any kind of prescient abilities. There is no reason to interpret the bizarre riddles Nostradamus as having any real meaning.

Evidence 3.

There have been no hurricanes within several orders of magnitude of the size of the ones my opponent is proposing. It is doubtful that their is even enough energy in Earth's meteorological system to produce such phenomena. There is no reason to assume such an event will take place on December 21st, 2012. December is not even hurricane season

Evidence 4. and 5.

The volcanic eruption in Iceland my opponent refers to delayed flights because it released a massive ash cloud. It's fairly well known that it is unadvisable to fly under adverse weather conditions. All this tells us is that large-scale geological events can have a large effect on people's everyday lives. This is true, but it does not mean that a large geological event that will cause worldwide devastation is actually going to happen. For instance, there is no reason to believe that Yellowstone will erupt and cause massive destruction at a specific time just because volcano's have erupted elsewhere in the past.

My opponent simply proposes a list of possible, highly damaging events. There is no evidence that they will actually happen. She seems to falsely believe that just because there is a moderate list of potentially bad events that could happen, it is therefore likely that they will happen. However, the probability that any of these events will happen is to negligibly low that even the composite probability of any one of them happening is too small to even be worth considering.

Well I am arguing that something significant will happen on 2012 I dont belive that we will all just blow up and that would be the end ( thats just too easy ) but I belive that something wether it is Yellowstone, a super Hurrincane, or another War World War 3, something is going to happen. We are all going to have to survive and it will be survival of the fittest. Honestly I am prepared I think it will be a reality check for the world; meaning the inhabitants and it will give earth a chance to regain and repair all that we have done to it ie. global warming, land fills etc.
