Chris Ofili painted The Holy Virgin Mary employing mixed media including oil paint, glitter, and polyester resin. It also included elephant dung and collaged pornographic images. Some people argue that it's not considred "art" and it's an "art crime". I believe that art is in the eye of the beholder. But, at the same time, it can be taken too far. What do you think?

First I'd like to define art. Merriam-Webster states, " Art is the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects." Meaning that the term doesn't simply apply to the typical artistic endeavors we usually associate with it (i.e. Music, Painting, etc.)

With that out of the way, I'd like to present my opinion. Artistic expression cannot be taken "too far", as it is the base level of human culture. Any art that offends or hurts the other levels of human culture, religion for example, is allowed to do so.

A foundation cannot offend the house built on top of it.

Pro is saying that Chris Ofili painted the Virgin Mary in "elephant dung," Con is saying Chris did not.

By the definition of Too Far being the description of what Chris apparently did, it falls to con to argue semantics (like where did he get the elephant? If it can't be proven he had an elephant to provide the dung, he can't have painted anything out of said dung.)

Too far, as in, the painting of the Virgin Mary was painted out of elephant dung and surrounded by pornographic images.
