OK, ok, i am definetly not saying parents should just let their kids do anything they want, and become drug addicts or thieves, but i am trying to say that YOU should persue a career YOU want to be in. I mean for an example, my friend has a huge dream of becoming a chef, however his mom once was a chef and she didn't like it. If you ask me this violates the ninth amedment, and possibly, the first. (For those who don't know that would basically be freedom itself.) Another example is my dad's mom(my grandma), she told my dad exactly who he should marry, regardless of his own personal feelings! My dad luckily disobeyed her an married my mom. Ever since my grandma has hated my mom. A final example is my mom's dad (my grandpa), who was choosing her career, but in college she secretly changed her major to geology.

So my point here was not to bore you with stories, but to give you an example of how bad things can get if parents control their kids! I think your freedom in America basically constitutes that you can chose your own religion, career, who you marry, and more! (I am just happy my parents will let me persue my own career, because they learned how hard it is to be controlled.) So what i am basically trying to say here that it isn't fair if you get your life told to you, and under no circumstances may you change that.

Additionally, here are some things that happen to people that get to over controlled. (again i say a little control is good, so you don't become a theif or anything.)

- You can become depressed with job, and as a result you may get no promotion, or worse a demotion, and worst of all fired.
- You can get depressed as a result of being married to someone to whom you share no real feelings to.
- You may be forced to live with your mom your whole life, and never have a kid.
- If you do have a kid, you may treat him unfairly, just as your own parents MAY have done.
-Etc....

For the reasons stated above, i feel it is unecessary and frankly un-constitional to be controled by your parents.

First, I like the point of your debate, but I think you poorly supported your end of the argument.

Generally, a human being cannot be controlled in the terms you talk about unless they are threatened with physical harm. That said, an individual is only under parental control when they are providing basic survival needs (food, shelter, clothing, health benefits, schooling, etc.). Usually, when those needs are not provided, a government agency steps in to monitor the situation (and if neccassary, remove the children from that environment).

When a person becomes of adult age (18 or 21...it may be different to some), they have the right to support their own ideas and decisions by supporting themselves with those same basic needs of survival. If they do not have the motivation to successfully obtain those needs, they have no right to complain about their own sitution since they have done nothing to change it.

If a person, as you say, is controlled into following the demands of their parents, the only person(s) to fault is the son/daughter. Individuality can only be shown when a person reconizes it themself.

Like your story, their parents said not to marry a certain person but they did anyway. The parents may not like this person, but if the person is happy with his decision...who cares?

My take:

Be your own person and provide for yourself so that you do not have to rely on the support or prompting of others.

Easy, people who do not get support. Do you realize how many people out their grew up with unsupportive and lackluster parents. It isn't that easy for some people.

I don't know whether the second persons point was made, because if you grow up respecting your parents and their values then it becomes hard to branch away from those values whether you think it is easy or not. You have to look at the fact that we are not controlled by what our parents say but by the fear of what will happen if we choose not to listen to them. I mean who doesn't want support when they are making those big decisions in life such as marriage, college major, or even what type of financial decisions to make?

I don't think it is right to control what your child does in their future , however I do not think it violates any amendments as a parent no longer controls you after you are 18 years of age. There is nothing your parent can do to force you to not follow your dream. How is it a violation of an amendment? You can control your child and what they do until they are legally an adult or I suppose until they are no longer living under your roof or you could kick them out. Otherwise though the only thing that can hold you back is yourself. All a parent can do once a child is an adult is talk or try to encourage their child to do a certain thing.
