-CAN"T DANCE -GANGSTER -VERY SMART What do you think of when you read these words? Blacks? Asians? Whites? Stereotype: an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about all people or things with a particular characteristic. "Stereotypes are a big problem in our society. It puts labels about how a person should act or live according to their sex, race, personality, and other facts." An anonymous survey was taken and many questions were identified concerning different races and their beliefs on these questions. Their questions and results below: "Imagine it is 2 AM, and you are walking by yourself down a poorly lit street. Four different men passed by at four different times. All four men are the same height and weight. Which man would you feel the most threatened by?" Results: The Black Man; (14%) The White Man; (5%) The Asian Man; (8%) The Hispanic Man; (6%) Question: "Which race is more intelligent?" Results: Africans (5; 4%) Asians (29; 21%) Irish (3; 2%) Middle Easterners (6; 4%) As you can see stereotypes effect us in many negative ways and I believe they will never go away.
Stereotypes can often be wrong but throughout time we have developed that perception. There must be a reason for the development of stereotypes, they must have a base off something. All lies have a grain of truth, while it is obvious discrimination and racism it also is a categorization that is sometimes helpful in street smarts or common sense. |
