I believe that dogs are better than cats. Dogs are man's best friend, and cats well aren't. Dogs are also alot more popular. I will keep my opening argument to that, and await my opponents rebuttal.

Massvideogamer, I wish you luck on this debate.

You say that dogs are "man's best friend", and yet give no proof to back this up. You haven't convinced me of this one bit, and I have as much right to believe that cats are a man's best friend as much as dogs are. I will elaborate on this in my next round.

Let's take a look at the comparisons between cats and dogs:

Dogs require countless hours of time, attention, and money to be put into them. They are bigger, louder, and at can meddle with things at times when you aren't in the mood for meddling. Dogs need constant walking and exercise, even when it isn't convienent for one to do so. Dogs are more prone to fleas than cats, and spread them quicker across your house and inhabitants. Their boisterous barks and bloodcurling howls keep many awake at night, contributing to the sleep-deprivation most of America has today.

Now let's take a look at cats; between 12-19 hours of their day is spent asleep. That's a lot less hours to be taken away from your day catering to them. When they are awake, they do not make much noise, with the occasional mew and soothing purr. They lack the need to be taken out for walks, sparing the ascent into cold, freezing weather on those winter days. Their quieter vocal cords spare sleepless nights, with owners being able to be at perfect states of relaxation.

Dogs being "more popular" than cats doesn't imply that they are necessarily better. Fast food is more popular among Americans than health food, but is not necessarily better.

Cats are less work, easier than dogs.

Kenicks, thank you for accepting this debate, and good luck.

The term "Dogs are man's best friend" was not an original statement by me. Everyone knows the term, and many people agree with it. Although that is purely opinion based, but here is where I prove that statement true.

You say that Dogs require a lot more work than Cats, and although they probably do need more care (and dogs do not necessarily need as much attention as you claim), Most families with dogs actually have a fenced in area so they can just let their dog out without worry. Cats do need more work than you thought; you need to fill their litter boxes with kitty liter. Cats also wander around the house aimlessly, and they often knock things over and break them.

Going back to the "Man's Best Friend" term, I would like to ask you; what joy can a Cat bring to you? You cannot exactly have a good game of ball with them as you can a Dog. You cannot put a leash on them and go for a nice walk on a warm summer day. You can really pet a Cat as well as you can a Dog, for many Cats retreat when approached.

Kenicks, this debate is about which is better, not about which requires the most work, and that seems to be all you talked about.

You do not exactly see Cats trained to smell out bombs. Dogs save people. They can sniff people out from under wreckage and let someone know if someone's there.

Dogs also help blind people see. People who are blind often need someone to help them see. This is where Dogs help. Dogs can be trained to help blind people see, something else you don't see Cats doing.

Another reason why Dogs are more popular than Cats is movies. You don't see NEARLY as many movies specifically about Cats than you do Dogs. It is not only because Dogs can be trained to be in movies, but also because they are more popular. Here is a list of Dog Movies:

As you can see there are 102 Movies about Dogs here, and there are no doubt many, MANY more to come. Film producers would not make so many movies about Dogs if they weren't more popular than Cats, otherwise there would be more Cat movies than dog ones.

I would also like to point out that there aren't any Cat shows on television, only Dog shows. This shows once AGAIN that Dogs are more popular than Cats.

There is also "The Puppy Bowl" on TV every year on Animal Planet on the day of the Super Bowl. This is where they film puppies playing and running around a miniature football field. Sure this may seem silly, but still, another thing about Dogs that there isn't with Cats.

In conclusion, Cats are indeed popular animals that require less care, but Dogs are much more popular and are indeed what many would call "Man's Best Friend."

Kenicks says that cats require less attention, but thats like buying a pet so that it can lay around and not interact for 17 hours. Dogs teach responsibility, and love you the same every single day until it passes. A TED Talks guy talking about how to relieve stress actually talked about how dogs are better stress relievers than cats, because when you walk into your house after a long day at work, dogs run up to you, greet you, love you, all that, while cats just sit back and say, "uhg, my owner is here.."

this was a good debate and also i like dogs and cats the same amount. i like it when you pet a cat and that deep rumbly purr starts up. on the other hand i looooove playing with and petting dogs. also when you say better, i have to admit that the care given does not matter, unless you mean which is better as a pet then it does matter. also your round 3 arguement was funny :)

Even though we've had a difference of opinion in the past, massvideogamer, I've got to hand it to you. You did a pretty awesome job and probably would've won my vote even if kenicks did not forfeit. Good job.
