Edgar Allen Poe is clearly the better writer then Stephen King. While Stephen King is obviously the more dedicated writer as he basically pops out a new book every year but lets review the simple facts. Stephen King's books all seem to follow a specific pattern, like count how many times he's used the alcoholic character in his stories. Poe's stories didn't really have a pattern in them and they were still good. Even if your looking through an inspirational point of view Poe still wins as he has a football team named after one of his stories. While Poe's life choices were far from perfect it did contribute to his stories as he tended to write from the heart. The only thing that King beats Poe at is success but that's only because of the time and place Poe lived in. His stories didn't become popular until after his death. King was lucky because he lives in a more progressive era then say Poe did. Had Poe wrote during this time frame he might have given King a run for his money.
I'm simply going to get to their best works. Stephens Kings best book out of all the books he has written is said to be The Stand which to not spoil anything is about a deadly virus that kills a large portion of the worlds population. Edgar Allan Poe's best work is unarguably The Raven which also not to spoil things anything is a lonely man who mourns for his wife and is going insane trying to forget and but yet wanting to remember her and a raven keeps telling him "Nevermore". Now from a movie point of view a movie about a deadly virus would probably beat a story about a insane man but this is from a writing standpoint. There is alot more symbolism in The Raven and the way it was written to make you think. Poe's work tells the mindset of one person and it doesn't need to end the world to do it. But with personal opinion aside The Raven is more known and has been dubbed one of the best poems ever written. With all of Stephen Kings works he lessens it to where alot of people debate over which book is better but there is little debate with Poe's work.
