It is in my opinion that the purpose of education is for the development if the person. Education teaches people how to understand life through many perspectives. The educators can broaden the understanding of another person by teaching them how be literate. When a person is literate, they can also speak better thus their communication is strengthened. Communication is vital in the world today because one cannot interact if he or she is not literate. "Yet only through communication can human life hold meaning. The teacher's thinking is authenticated only by the authenticity of the students' thinking. The teacher cannot think for his students, nor can he impose his thought on them" As mentioned by Freire, he believes that communication is key into developing the person"s mind. I can agree with Freire because language and communication is what brings people together in the world today. If it was not for communication, people would never be able to make agreements or learn new things from people all around the world.

You stated in your arguement " As mentioned by Freire, he believes that communication is key into developing the person"s mind. I can agree with Freire because language and communication is what brings people together in the world today. If it was not for communication, people would never be able to make agreements or learn new things from people all around the world." I this specific case though wouldn't this be more for the development of society as a whole rather than a persons individual development. Hirsch states " As mentioned by Freire, he believes that communication is key into developing the person"s mind. I can agree with Freire because language and communication is what brings people together in the world today. If it was not for communication, people would never be able to make agreements or learn new things from people all around the world.' This meant that everyone needs to develop from education together rather than just personally so the world becomes a better place

You bring up some very interesting points but communication is used every day in the lives of people. In fact, communication is being used right now between us both and if neither of us were literate then we would not be able to have this debate. In the words of Hirsch, he asks "Why is literacy so important in the modern world? Some of the reasons, like the need to fill out forms or get a good job, are so obvious that they needn't be discussed. But the chief reason is broader. The complex undertakings of modern life depend on the cooperation of many people with different specialties in different places. Where communications fail, so do the undertakings." Hirsch brings up a valid point that will help my argument because he talks about how by educating people they become developed enough to occupy jobs. I agree that by educating people, they can understand life so much more in a broader perspective. Without education society would not be able to function as well.

Using the same quote that you used "Why is literacy so important in the modern world? Some of the reasons, like the ... Where communications fail, so do the undertakings." Yes this is all about how educating people helps them to get jobs and better themselves but that eventually all just leads up to the bigger picture in the end in which is bettering the world as a whole by educating those who make it up.

Education should be viewed as a privilege in the world today because it is not given everywhere around the world. People in third world countries don"t necessarily have too many opportunities to obtain an education and that is why there is such poverty. If all those people were educated and literate, then they could fight back against the corrupt people who run their country. If people are full of knowledge, they will be able to identify what is wrong and what is right. It is my belief that the purpose of education is to develop the person because if all these people in third world countries were educated, then they would prosper. Education is what would set these people free. I would like to use the comparison of the United States against Africa. Many more people are educated in the United States and that is why economically the United States is far more superior to Africa. People discover many more things about themselves when they can understand things around them. Freire states, "Education as the practice of freedom - as opposed to education as the practice of domination - denies that man is abstract, isolated, independent, and unattached to the world; it also denies that the world exists as a reality apart from men" In my interpretation, Freire believes that education should be practiced by the means of freedom instead of for domination. As mentioned before in my argument, education liberates not only people but their minds as well. Education makes people more independent and gives them free thought. I believe that in the United States the freedom of speech was created in order for people to express themselves through what they know and understand. Education brings attachment to the world and it brings people closer. It is also stated by Hirsch that "In modern life we need general knowledge that enables us to deal with new ideas, events, and challenges." General knowledge does engage people to have new ideas and take on challenges. There are too many examples that can be used to support my argument but time is limited. It is in my belief that the purpose for education is for the development of the person.

I will say that you did make very valid points in the stance of education being there to give us better chances in life and to better the world which is good, but this is more leaning towards what i was saying before in the sense that even though we all seem to think that education has become an individual task just to better our own personal self. We eventually realize we were working towards something other a job or a family; it never really focused on personal development but it focuses on society moving up as a whole bettering in self by teaching its citizens how to live there life. Hence is why Hirsch's quote fits perfectly here "Why is literacy so important in the modern world? Some of the reasons, like the need to fill out forms or get a good job, are so obvious that they needn't be discussed. But the chief reason is broader. The complex undertakings of modern life depend on the cooperation of many people with different specialties in different places. Where communications fail, so do the undertakings.". To educate is to teach the whole what happened before life and how to live it now.
