Europeans should not be singled out; conquest, fighting, exploitation and slavery are inevitable.

The title says it all. This debate is about why Europeans should not be taking so much blame for tragedy in the past because almost all other major cultures have done similar things. I am also stating my opinion that if the tides were turned, Africans would of enslaved Europeans or Native Americans would of pushed out and decimated Europeans.

Waiting for contender. First round is acceptance, second is argument, third is rebuttal, and fourth is rebuttal and conclusion. Good luck.

C1) There have been enslavement, conquest, and exploitation in cultures throughout the whole world. Arabs spread Islam, started the foundations of modern slave trade, and conquered lands throughout the Middle East, the Medditerean and North Africa. There are many other examples of countries doing the same thing. The Moors in Italy, the Mongols in China and Central Asia, and the various African tribes fighting each other. To say that this is a European thing just because Europeans became the most technologically advanced and therefore the rulers of the modern world is ignorant and foolish. This world is a world of survival of the fittest, and the strong prey on the weak. There are way too many examples of non-European peoples behaving "badly" and for me to list every single war and conflict, or invasion and annexation would take forever. The entire idea of an "empire" is the controlling of foreign lands. There have been Asian, Arab, African, and Pre-Columbian empires throughout history. Europeans did not invent empires. With empires, exploitation happens whether it is human, labor, or natural resource based. Therefore Europeans should not be singled outbbecause of their lasting success.

C2) Just because people like Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were European and technically killed or were responsible for more deaths then anyone else on the planet doesn't mean that other cultures haven't had brutal conquerors and genicidal mass murderers. The world's population is immensely larger then it has ever been. If you account for population inflation then historical figures like Genghis Khan could have killed just as many people if not more. Genghis Khan was responsible for 40 million deaths. Timur Lenk was responsible for 14 million deaths. The fall of the Mong Dynasty was responsible for 25 million deaths. The mideast slave trade was responsible for 18.5 million deaths. The list goes on and on whether it's becsuse of a leader and his exploits or because of a war, serious of rebellions, falls, actions or revolutions.(1) None of this has to do with white people. Therefore Europeans should not be singled out because their famous evil people were more recent and because of technology and larger populations more deadly and efficient.

C3) Slavery is not a European institution. It has been around since the beginning of time and has been known in almost all ancient civilizations starting with Sumer.(2) The Code of Hammurabi spoke of laws regarding slaves. There are numerous cultures that have had slaves.(3) The Egyptians enslaved the Jews and other peoples. African tribes enslaved prisoners of war and enemy civilians from other tribes and then sold them to Arabs or Europeans. Slavery in Africa was going on way before White people stepped foot on the continent. Slavery in all cultures was always more about the result of war in which the victors enslave either the enemy soldiers, the civilians of the losing side, or both. Arab slaves came from many regions around the known world.(4) The medievil slave trade was dominated by Arabs. The Arab slave trade in this regard has been going on for over a millenium. (5)

In talking about medival times, Wikipedia states: " The Arab slave trade is thought to have originated with trans-Saharan slavery.[21][22] Arab, Indian, and Oriental traders were involved in the capture and transport of slaves northward across the Sahara desert and the Indian Ocean region into Arabia and the Middle East, Persia, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent.[23][24] The slave trade from East Africa to Arabia was dominated by Arab and African traders in the coastal cities of Zanzibar, Dar Es Salaam and Mombasa.[24][25] Tens of thousands of black Zanj slaves were imported to lower Iraq, where they may have, according to Richard Hellie, constituted at least a half of the total population there in the 9th and 10th centuries. At the same time, many tens of thousands of slaves in the region were also imported from Central Asia and the Caucasus."

Even today, non-white or European places still have mass illegal slavery. Mauritania just abolished slavery of blacks in 2007. (6) In the 8th century, the Moors raided coastal places between the Meditterean and Atlantic Ocean like Italy and Spain. It is estimated that the barbuary pirates captured 1.25 million slaves from Western Europe and North America in the span of four centuries.(7) Slaves were a huge part of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman's (and Arabs in general) had many white slaves from the Causcusus and Eastern Europe (8)(9), some of which they forced to fight in the army. Indians also bought slaves from Arab slave traders, and had enslaved their own people since the beginnings of Indian known civilization.(10)

Slavery was also big in China.(12) During the Tang dynasty, Chinese captured and enslaved Korean villagers. Koreans were also enslaved by the Japanese during the 16th century, and many dynasties had written and established forms of slavery. (11)(13) Chinese muslims were sold to other Muslims as slaves.(14) More recently, there was a large slave class of mountain tribes captured and enslaved in the Khmer Empire.(15) Between the 17th and early 20th century, one-third of the population of some areas of South East Asia (specifically Burma and Thailand) were slaves.(16)

In Africa, slavery was a huge institution. (17) In the early Islamic empires of Eastern Africa like Ghana, Mali, Songhai, or among the tribes of the Ashanti and Yoruba, slaves made up one third of the population. As recently as the 19th century, half of Sierra Leone, Madagascar, the Kongo and other peoples were slaves.(17)(18) The statistics go on and on but in short, slavery was as big of a part of Africa as in any European country.

In Mesoamerica, prisoners of war and debtors were also enslaved.(19)

(C4) Colonialism, the spread of Democracy, Western ideas and even invasions and forced abolision has led to the extinction of legal institutional slavery. Europeans (and Americans) helped end slavery, whether people were forced or by choice. Therefore, Europeans are not evil or different in any way to other cultures, many of which were angry and wanted to continue the institution!
