By euthanasia I mean assisted suicide, not the murder of those who are unable to make their own decisions. Please present your arguments in the first round.

Euthanasia should not be allowed. It is ridiculous that someone would be fine with killing a person who could otherwise live longer. Keeping your life is the only thing that truly matters in this world, as it is the only thing you know to be real. Giving up and deciding to end it is simply weak and ignorant. At least when suffering you are able to have experiences and progress as a person, even if only through conversations with family members and nurses. Besides, life is suffering anyway, so maybe we should all just kill ourselves?

Firstly, it is not "killing a person who could otherwise live longer". Euthanasia is defined as "the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma."[1]

Imagine this situation. You are diagnosed with Parkinson's. Not a terrible disease sure, but the doctors have told you that you will one day forget the faces of your loved ones, you won't even remember your name. You're young, under the age of 50, and this is a inconceivable notion. You will go into care, unable to take care of yourself. You will acquire dementia. You won't even remember who you are. You decide this isn't living, this is not the way you want to be remembered. You decide you want to kill yourself. Because you won't be living, you will be dead, instead a stranger will take over your body. You think about the pain that it will cause your family when you don't remember their faces.

But you can't kill yourself in a humane, painless way. It is illegal. It is "wrong". Replace Parkinson's with something more painful, cancer, multiple sclerosis. What's your life worth when you can't communicate, when someone has to clean you, feed you. There's no such thing as dignity anymore. Keeping your life is not the most important thing in this world.

Don't get me wrong however, euthanasia should be a personal choice. It's not murder, it's suicide. And it's not cowardly. Is all pain medication "weak" then? Are hospitals simply "ignorant"? Won't the people receiving all the medical treatment want to have "experiences"? Even if they'll be in excruciating pain? Even if they'll be dead in a month? But then, they need to "progress as a person".

Please, life is not suffering. Not being able to use your limbs is suffering. Losing your mind is suffering. Not being able to talk, while under terrible, terrible pain is suffering. And I believe, since they can't move their limbs, if they don't want to live anymore, and they are not severely depressed, who are we to force them to live, as if we could bear their pain, and tell them they are lucky to be alive?
