It is not expensive election campaign that promotes corruption but the corrupt candidates.
In the world we live in posters, flyers, stickers, billboards, radio campaigns, press, TV or even internet may be required to reach out to the masses which require large funds. Therefore the campaign needs this sum of money in order to be a success. The candidate needs an efficient campaigning mechanism to convey his message and views to the voters. The donations majorly come from the business barons because the common masses cannot afford to contribute. The people in general cannot afford to pay beyond their own bills.
The candidates often adopt various ways to attract the voters. This phenomenon was observed in the university elections. In the recently conducted student union elections we saw the candidates wooing the voter by organizing parties and inviting all the students in order to win their support. Some even used gimmicks such as offering chocolates and flowers with their names attached. But the majority of voters decide in advance whom they will support. Voting decisions are based on voters" social origins, political preconceptions, personal philosophies and rating of the relevant policies and performance of the contenders for office. This trend is also observed in the National Elections. The general masses flock to the election booths to vote for that candidate who proves to be a better leader rather than for that candidate who merely attracts them with honey coated words and glossy and sham campaigns. The voters today are well informed, rational and intelligent human beings.
Money or funding is the life- blood of any political campaign. Political campaigns can make or break a candidacy. Depending on how well your campaign functions, a candidate or a policy can win or lose when it comes to voting. Without the necessary funding, campaigns will cease to exist.
Political campaigns are high-stakes where there are no returns if and when losing. Many candidates end their campaigns due to a lack of funding.
In short, this cements how expensive elections let alone National elections are.
The most important aspect of the modern campaign is targeting. You see, any candidate can be electable, if you are able to target those who will support that specific candidate. And, every fundraising effort will be more successful if you are able to target those who have been identified as supporters.
The political campaigns help to strengthen the bond between the voters and the contesting candidate. The candidate needs to shell out a large sum of money to reach out to the people. I firmly believe that the election campaigning is undoubtedly an expensive process but this may not necessarily mean that it can only be fed through corruption.
And now I would rest my case with these words-
"The universe is not rich enough to buy the vote of an honest man."
