Definitions

Waste-to consume, spend, or employ uselessly or without adequate return; use to no avail or profit; squander

Since Pro claims "Facebook is a waste of time" without stipulations all I have to do to disprove Pro is to show even one instance where Facebook is not a waste of time. And there are several.

Uses of Facebook

Facebook is a very useful program.

Socializing

Facebook provides a quick and easy avenue for people to socialize, negating the need to actually go places in order to do it. Furthermore it helps socializing go faster. In your profile you can specify a great deal of things about yourself. This allows for people to find other like-minded people and then decide later to socialize with them in real life. This makes for a closer group of friends with less tensions.

Autism

Facebook is also a good stepping stone for sufferers of autism to gain valuable social skills. People with autism who have difficulty socializing in real life often find it easier online. Their experiences interacting with people online can help them learn about interacting with people in real life. For some Facebook could be the catalyst that could make the difference between a lifetime of loneliness and institutionalization and a successful, independent, and happy life.

Networking

Facebook also provides a good means to expand one's contacts in the world of work. The profile can be used to display work history and instant communication with colleages can be established online.

Political Organizing

As groups can have profile pages, so can political groups. Facebook offers these groups a new tool in reaching out to people who may not have even been aware of their existance in previous times.

Games

This is probably the easiest in Facebook to criticize, but a little rest and relaxation never hurt anyone. The games on Facebook can help take the edge off a stressful day while strengthening the social bonds between people.

Pro

Well you definetly made some good points but even though you can socialize on facebook it is also possible socialize outside with friends and family, and it is also better for social skills, because if you are on the phone or on skype or in person you are actually talking and reacting to the person you are having a conversation with, weather on facebook is only through texting.

Also, a lot of people who follow other people's walls and feed think that they are experiencing what the other people is doing, but this is of course wrong because it's easy for anybody to just write something that might not be true.

it would be better to interact with friends in real life than on facebook and also it is impossible to really keep up with more than 50 or 100 friends at a time.

Pro has dropped my arguments on: Autism, Networking, Political Organizing, and Games.

I remind the voters that Pro has the burden of proof and that to win this debate all I need is one non-refuted argument showing how Facebook is, even if in only one instance not a waste of time.

Rebuttals

1.
While it is generally better for social skills to socialize in person or even through through vocal medium for some people the best way for them to get social skills is through Facebook.

Autistic people often demonstrate great writing ability, even non-verbal ones. For non-verbal sufferers of autism facebook may be their only means of having any form of a social life.

Even a person who is merely shy may at their point in life find it easier to socialize on Facebook rather than face-to-face, and until they are comfortable with face-to-face socialization Facebook is better than nothing.

Furthermore, it is not always possible to socialize in real life or with the people you want to socialize with. A person might be far away from their friends for what ever reason, and Facebook is a way for them to connect with them anyways.

2.
Just because people are experiencing things vicariously and those things may or may not have actually happened doesn't mean it is a bad thing. People experience things that didn't really happen vicariously all the time through books, movies, and plays. Those are not a waste of time and neither is Facebook. Real or not people don't care. They have the same experience of it regardless.

3.
Although it is impossible to keep up with that many people simply having a connection on Facebook can be a good starting ground for networking and other opportunities. Furthermore, you can choose who among Facebook friends to pay the most attention to and develop real life relationships. It allows you to learn a lot about people from a distance before hanging out with them in real life, so you can choose better friends.

Reasons for voting decision: Arguments go to Con as not only did Pro drop his arguments on autism, networking, political organizing, and games, but Pro also did well in refuting Con's actual responses. Con's point about the helpfulness of FB for people with autism was also extremely helpful in his case. Spelling and grammar go to Con for a great framing of the debate.

Reasons for voting decision: More in depth analysis and rebuttals. Also his refutations where worse than cons. Con wins, also pro had no real arguments himself that stood in the end.
