Flag Burning should not be illegal for the following reasons:

1)If you own a United States flag and some matches and a piece of land safe enough to burn a flag in, then it is constitutional for you to have the right to do whatever you want with your own flag! Making it a crime also diminishes our freedom of speech.

2)It is discriminatory that it is illegal to burn a United States flag and not another country's flag. With so many immigrants and a constitution promoting equality, the law wouldn't be a promoter of patriotism any longer, but a promoter of racism.

Good Luck!

Blond Guy I don't think that we should burn the American flag due to the fact that it would show pure hate of our country and rebellion against it.That would be an atrocity. The American Flag stands proudly for freedom and the symbolism of why it is there anyway. That is why it should be illegal to burn it.

Burning the American Flag would show pure disdain for your rights as an American Citizen. Our fore fathers fought to give us the liberties and freedoms that the flag stands for so why try to squash them like they mean nothing at all . In response to your previous statement about burning the flag on your own property. You would not have the rights to the property if it was not for our founding fathers and the American Flag .

Did you know that there was other countries who hate us that has burn our flag, like iran. This flag has been through hell but still stands for our freedoms. This is a great country and you would know if you ever been overseas. This is the land of opportunity and the freedom of rights.Maybe you should understand what your country stands for.

Wow james94, you didn't rebut my argument at all.
Saying "I don't think that we should burn the American flag" says nothing.
I agree with you.
But try addressing my points and tell me why it should be ILLEGAL!

Blond Guy, The reason that burning the American Flag should be illegal is because of the liberties and freedoms that we now have today. You requested that I address these issues now here is my thought on the subject. Our founding fathers fought through rain , sleet ,floods and all kinds of weather to deserve the rights and liberties that we now take for granted. Next please .

Freedom was not based on Racism freedom was based on people fighting side by side . The same goes for liberty . This country was founded on freedom not people being white or black or any of the other types . To say that someone is racist is to be stereotypical and ignorant. That is the reason that the American Flag should never be burned so that ends my thought on that subject.

To reiterate what I spoke about previously , I still feel that that as Americans we should be more respectful of the American Flag, and what it stands for.

Here is a logical question for you and all Americans "Do you Respect the American Flag, and our freedoms?"

james94, you don't seem to be able to get the point we're trying to make here, do you?

if you think burning the flag is an insult to the country, it IS, but ONLY because YOU FEEL THAT IT IS... burning a flag, by itself, is only one thing: "burning a flag."

any meaning beyond that is meaning YOU'VE ADDED to the situation.

c'mon.

What were his points then? "You shouldn't burn the flag" is not a point. You shouldn't insult your mother either, but that's not illegal.

I personally believe that flag burning is sad, but the flag does stand for, among other things, the right to burn it.

LOL.... and my arguments at http://www.plusaf.com... are that it's NOT a lack of morality at all....

ah, maybe WE should debate....?

some time soon... i'm busy for a while and i don't want to lose by default by not being around to reply...

:)))

so, if you want to just chat without formal debate, that's fine with me, too.... where's the lack of morality in burning a piece of colored cloth that a bunch of people have agreed to hold as a symbol of their country?

it's still a piece of cloth. if you start putting the weight of morality on it, as in burning it is disrespectful or sinful or sacrilege, well..... you're right up there with the islamofascists who are ready to kill people for insulting their religion... not damaging it in any concrete way, mind you..... just insulting it or drawing a cartoon that mocks their "holiest of holiest one."

i have trouble seeing the difference between the two actions. you don't, right?
:)

hey, does the security code work in lower case, too?

My argument is not that it is illegal, my argument is that it is a lack of morality.

Blond guy, I am still waiting for your debate challenge, you pick the topic.

to FiredUpRepublican.........

yep, not surprising you'd react that way. most "fired up republicans seem to."

i want to apologize for my previous post, because it was my first one and i missed the point of voting for the debating acument of the debaters, not to comment on their positions as right or wrong....

since this thread has now gone in THAT direction, i invite FUR to go back to the link i included and read all of it.

my background is jewish, and i don't get "fired up" when i see muslims or arabs burn the israeli flag or stomp it into the ground... just as i didn't feel that way when berkeley students did the same, years ago.

it's a symbol.

yes, it's a sign of disrespect and is insulting and all that junk, too, but you should also be aware of Article II of the Bill Of No Rights... http://www.plusaf.com...

Why is it a "slap in our face?" Burning of the flag is a symbol of protest against the actions of the government. If someone has to go to the length of actually burning the symbol of America, don't you think it's a pretty good indication that our government is betraying us, which is the biggest slap in the face of them all? People don't burn flags because they hate America; they burn the flag because they love it.

blond guy - That was my point.

While flag burning isn't illegal, it is a serious detriment to our country and a slap in our face. Iran marches over our flag, Hammas burns our flag. They all shout "Death To America!" while doing so. There are plenty of more respectful and moral ways to present your argument than to go out and burn flags, it doesn't make much of a point, it only shows your ignorance of everything our nation has done to keep it flying.

To ask someone to prove why it is illegal is in itself securing your own victory. The fact is, burning the flag comes down to moral ethic, not governmental legislation. If someone hates America that much, they shouldn't be here. Blond Guy, you have a habit of starting these debates over very controversial issues, but you fail to make any logical point in your arguments. I would love to debate you sometime and do this site a favor and put you in your place.
