The American Flag is an honored symbol of our country. But over time, if a flag is constantly flown, the flag becomes worn out and tattered. How do you properly retire such an important thing? If you ask any military personnel they will all tell you the same thing, "The proper way to retire the National Colors is to burn them." If a law is passed to prohibit the burning of the United States flag, how will we then retire the colors? Would you rather throw it into the trash amongst rotten and disgusting garbage? And if you keep all of those old "retired" flags where will they be stored? Museums won"t be able to take them all, and even if they did, eventually there would be no room for more. So, once again, you have a choice. Burn the retired flags through a proper ceremonial process, or throw them in the garbage.
The flag burning amendment, is a controversial proposed constitutional amendment to the United States Constitution that would allow the United States Congress to prohibit expression of political views through the physical desecration of the flag of the United States. The concept of flag desecration continues to provoke a heated debate over protecting a national symbol, protecting free speech, and protecting the liberty represented by a national symbol.
