Foxnews is a legitimate form of news. This includes it's TV station and it's website.

First Round - acceptance
Second Round - Arguments
Third Round - Rebuttals & Conclusion

Good luck.

I accept this.
Debate Round No. 1

Thanks to my opponent for accepting this debate.

I. Distinction Between Commentary and Reporting

First, we must draw a distinction between commentary and reporting. Commentary does not count as news as it is mostly opinion. The news we must examine is the factual reporting aspect. You can rail against bias all you want but that only makes up part of the Fox News programming.

Now we can move on safely examining the factual reporting aspect of news and disregard the opinion commentary which is not news but opinion.

II. Comparisons

The Pew Research Center did a study comparing commentary to factual reporting and Fox News was 45% reporting and 55% commentary. Rival left-leaning news outlet MSNBC had a mere 15% factual reporting to a whopping 85% commentary [1].

Other rival CNN had a similar distribution to Fox but only had 46% commentary and 54% factual reporting. Fox falls in line with CNN as roughly 50-50 news to commentary ratio but blows MSNBC out of the water. If you want "legitimate" news then Fox seems to be ahead of MSNBC and falls in line with CNN on how much factual reporting is done.

III. Ratings

Fox News is #1 in news ratings year after year. If the network was a bogus source of news then it would not be as popular as it is. In 2013 Fox News hauled in better ratings than CNN and MSNB combined [2]. They were the #7 most watched cable network while CNN and MSNBC didn't even crack the top 30 [2]. If Fox was an illegitimate source of news it wouldn't draw so many viewers. Especially when compared to other news outlets my opponent is sure to claim are "legitimate" in which Fox is far more popular time and time again

IV. The Actual News

Most of Fox's hard facts come from collaborated news efforts with outlets such as the AP and the Washington Free Beacon or come from those outlets directly [3][4][5]. Many hard news facts come from the AP then Fox comments on them. Is the AP a legitimate source of news? If so then much of Fox's news is also legitimate.

Also, on their website whenever something is an opinion it is clearly marked "OPINION" in the title so you know what you're reading is opinion and not news [6]

Fox may have bias commentary but all news outlets do. Fox's factual reporting makes up 45% of airtime and is far, far better than MSNBC and on par with CNN. Fox is the most popular news outlet by far and draws millions of daily viewers. If it was not legitimate would they draw so many viewers? Much of Fox's actual hard reporting and straight facts come from well respected news wires such as the AP. If the AP is legitimate so is Fox for news. If it's commentary and not news its easy to tell.

This topic is skewed in favor of Pro.

Any news source can give reliable facts, but for every chart, there are thousands of interpretations, not all of which hold equal credence.

For example, the unemployment rate lowering. I could just as easily attribute that to the president as I could look into the 6 different "unemployment rates" are, and explain to my audience that the commonly used statistic isn't as accurate as people (liberals) would like you to believe.

Just because a news source tells you the truth, doesn't mean they tell you the Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth, so help them God.

Why did no one vote on this? This is a forfeited debate.

That simply is false.

As long as the facts are good, the news, AKA the facts, are fine. Commentary =/= news.

No biased news source, no matter how liberal or conservative, is reliable.
