I use webs and wetpaint to make free websites. I think they should offer free domain names. They say they charge to make money, but don't they get enough with their ads and premium services that give you more features? They're already more limited than paid web hosts. Don't you think that free domain names would get them more users? That is why I think free domain names should be available.

Domain name market turned to be a huge source of revenue, that's why its my belief that it will never be for free anymore.
Why doesn't Freewebs and Webtpaint offer free doamins?
You have to pay for a domain because there are costs involved to domain name registrars (freewebs, webpaint). The domain name system's actually quite complex. When you're paying for your domain you're also paying for servers to hold and serve the records and registry services that hold the domain record in your name. In all, for a standard .com domain there are probably four or five companies performing different services for you and taking their cut of the money.
If Freewebs and Webpaint were to offer free domains, how would they generate revenue? Your service alone cannot rely on ads and premium services, your company would need much more incoming revenue to survive. An ads usually generates about 100-200 dolllars a month. A premium service probably from $2-20 a month depending on the serice. A Typical price for new domain names range from about $7 to $15 per year, but on average a company would proabably have 10-20 registrars a day. you do the math. Also, when must people registrar a domain they transfer that name to another web host or their own, so i wouldn't have to much confidence on premium web services on generating income.

Okay, suppose you want to make a website about koala bears. do you want it to be called www.koalabears.webs.com, or www.koalabears.wetpaint.com, or www.angelfire.com/koalabears/? No, you don't. You want a www.koalabears.com. And in our economy, people don't want to pay for a domain name. Besides, a website like webs.com has more than 1,000,000 websites. I would say about a quarter of the users have premium services, like more space and no ads on your site. That cost's about $16 a year. Now take 250,000 users and multiply that by 16$ and you're getting over $2,000,000 a year.

If domains would be free a lot of Internet marketing niches would be gone and a lot of people would be left without a relevant domain for their business or product. Imagine willing to market a very niche product and the practically all 3, 4 or even 5 word based domain names being taken. Now that wouldn't be nice, would it ?

And thirdly, the last thing we need is 15 year olds hogging up a bunch of domains with poor content. It's hard enough as it is to find a decent domain.

Protip: Get mommy to let you use her debit card or get your own. These "free" online website services can't make websites that anyone wants to go to anyway.

This is dumb. I have 3 domains and I bought each of them for $1.99/year. Plus if you want real features (MySQL databases, etc) with a decent amount of bandwidth and storage space you're going to need to buy hosting anyway.

why should they ?
think abou it you can pay a fee as small as £5 for a web domain name , if these sites offered free domain names the web would double in the amount of crappy websites which i dont think is possible but it would if this happended.
