I've been trying to challenge some few individuals on this topic, but none of them seem to accept for whatever reasons. So I guess I'll just make another open debate.

I intend to argue that any LGBT marriage should be legalized, and thus when I say "gay", I am referring to LGBT.

My sole argument is that gay people have the same rights to marry as do heterosexual people. The word "marriage" does not need to be a definite prerequisite - the only thing that should happen is for gays to have the same rights as heterosexuals. Civil unions can be an appropriate alternative, but only until it has the exact same rights as marriage (of which it currently does not).

I will allow my opponent to go first and I will refute his/her arguments accordingly.

First off i dont neccissarily think being gay is wrong but i think the marriage idea is a little overboard. First homosexuals already have the right to be together and have relationships and basically all the same rights as heterosexuals anyway. One thing I dont understand is why marriage is so important to them let alone any sexual preference group because you can do anything you could before you were married. The only thing i can think of is biblical issues about sex(even though most have it premeridally anyway) and that shouldnt even affect gay marriage because the bible is already against them being gay so that shouldnt affect their debating over it.

I thank my opponent for accepting this debate.

=====Counterarguments=====

"First homosexuals already have the right to be together and have relationships and basically all the same rights as heterosexuals anyway."

----> Quite untrue. Civil unions and marriages have the same rights, but only STATE-wise. This gives around 600 rights for participants in the civil union/marriage. Federally speaking, the government gives about 1,138 rights[1] also. HOWEVER, in 1996 the Defense of Marriage Act[2] was passed by Bill Clinton, and effectively a marriage was defined between a man and a woman in the federal court. This means that for the majority of states who grant homosexuals civil union, there is an imbalance in rights. Basically, gays in a civil union get LESS rights (about a 1000 of them) than if they were in a marriage or if DOMA wasn't passed.

=====Conclusion=====

My opponent's main argument is that the rights are the same. A simple research shows this is untrue, and thus my opponent's argument fails.

Zeratul. You did a fantastic job. This is probably one of the best debates on here i have seen so far. You deserve to win this.

Terrorism and breach of contract are no more connected in real life.

But both are rightly declared illegal for the same basic reason :)

Roy, InquireTruth was the one who brought restrooms and sports teams into the equation, not me. There is a very obvious and large difference between separation in restrooms and the right for two consenting adults to make a legal contract. InquireTruth is just setting up a rather transparent strawman.

Um... pretty much everywhere I've heard it, the slippery slope from gay to zoosexuality and pedophilia is in the political realm, not the individual's preferences...

so that was a pretty irrelevant argument Maya, due to context-dropping :)

You keep insisting that zoophilia and pedophilia are the next logical steps after homosexuality, but you have yet to provide any PROOF.

I'll provide myself as an example: I am a bonafide bisexual. You seem to think that since I am attracted to members of my own sex that I must desire to have sex with children and animals of other species. I can personally attest to the fact that I have never had such desires. That is proof that you are wrong. Period.

If you think sexual ambiguity is balderdash, try coming up with a logical argument why the government should define a post-op transsexual's sex by either physical attributes or chromosomes.

I said this before, but I guess I'll have to repeat myself because you don't seem to be listening: I NEVER said that homosexuality being natural has anything to do with it being right or wrong. YOU are the one who seems to be stuck at this point. I ONLY said that because homosexuality IS natural, it is false to condemn it as unnatural. Why is that so difficult for you to understand?

"Let me help you with the logic:
1. Things that are natural are basic rights
2. Homosexuality is natural
Therefore homosexuality is a basic right.
or
1. Things practised by humans and other mammalian species are natural
2. Other mammalian species practise homosexuality
Therefore homosexuality is natural"

Again, amazing how you are ignoring the bulk of one's points and focusing on only one part of it. Sexuality is a complex issue. Many different factors come into play. But this doesn't suit your argument, so you focus on what does and eliminate the rest. It really does amaze me.
