The government should not be allowed to control who you love, and marry. It does not matter who you love, you should be allowed to love them without fear or anyone telling you can can not love them. The government already controls most of what we do, but who you love should not be something they have control of.

I would like to thank my opponent for this debate. I will let them begin their argument in the next round but will start just a brief outline of my position as they have done. Let us first recognize that this is about marriage, not love. Legalizing gay marriage or not does not stop, nor limit the ability of anyone to love another. It does not stop being able to live with each other, nor show your love with each other. To argue that by not recognizing gay marriage the government is saying that gays cannot love each other is a gross strawman of the arguments.

A superior choice in the matter would be for the recognition of civil unions, for both gay and straight. And to have government get out of "marriage" and leave that back as a religious ceremony that has no barring in government, benefits, rights, or taxes.

Well, sadly I have nothing to refute, nor anything of mine to defend. I will restate that the government should not be involved in a religious ceremony like marriage (we can cite separation of church and state as at least a starting point for debate) any more than the state should recognize that a Bar Mitzvah makes someone a legal adult.

Reasons for voting decision: Pro disappeared after R1 (and never responded to Cons R1), so args and conduct to Con for the FF.
