Gay marriage should be legal. There is no valid reason homosexuals shouldn't have the same rights as as any other citizen of the United States.
RealLifeRick

Con

Gay marriage shouldn't be legal. It destroys the original purpose of marriage: to breed and raise children. A child needs both feminine and masculine influence for the best possible upbringing. A gay couple doesn't have the balance that a hetero does. Domestic partnership and adoption is a better alternative. Redefining marriage would be the undoing of over 1000 years of tradition and family structure.

Children-
Your purpose for marriage is wrong. Marriage is about love, and about being with the one you choose. Being a homosexual parent will not influence a child because gay isn't a choice. A child will be curious, that much is true.

Tradition-
Just because there weren't homosuxual families years and years ago does not mean that cannot be changed. There are many other traditions broken, such as how things are made or how people live in general.

Marriage isn't all about love. But it is a major part of marriage and I thank you for reminding me. Being a homo parent WILL influence the child because they will begin to see that their parents are not the same as the majority of their peers. It WILL make life exponentially harder for the child.

And you are right. Things can be changed. But change isn't always good. Can you prove that gay marriage would be more of a benefit for mankind than a liability?

It doesn't have to be a benefit to be legal, and I have said nothing of it being a benefit. It is simply treating gays the same as we treat straight people. And you are correct when you say it will make a child's life harder, but so does divorce, high expectations from parents, ect. But, none of those are illegal. Every child is different, so a child's reaction may be different from another child's.
RealLifeRick

Con

I have to disagree with you. Laws are specifically made to be beneficial to society as a whole. And your points are moot concerning divorce and expectations as those are things beyond human control. And yes, every child is different but but every child does have one similarity: impressionability. Children are like sponges. The behaviors they see, they take in and imitate. To conclude, it is unfair to the heterosexual majority to be imposed on by the small homosexual minority. The homosexual community is a vocal but minuscule community. And since we live in a democracy, majority rules.

I would completely disagree with a large amount of evidence including the Head of the Division of Human Genetics in NUS (one of the top universities in the world). It can be seen from a world perspective or Christian that homosexuality is detrimental to society.

IwinYoulose333, are you saying that being homosexual IS a choice?

Currently, everyone has the same right and privilege: you can marry anyone of the opposite sex. It should be said that homosexuals want special privileges opposed to everyone else.

Also, Pro makes a huge statement about homosexuality being a choice with nothing to support that statement. For instance, to prove it is a choice Dr. John Tay, a clinical geneticist and former Head of the Division of Human Genetics in NUS (one of the top universities in the world), stated that "The effects of genes on behavior are very indirect because genes make proteins, not preferences. The scientific truth is that our genes do not force us into anything. Genes are responsible for an indirect influence, but on average, they do not force people into homosexuality. The startling conclusion is that genetic factors are much less important than environmental ones in the causation of homosexuals. On this basis, the claim by homosexuals that "I am born that way, so I cannot change" is simply not true."

Two sides her obviously. If it was, you force people by LAW to accept something that some people disagree with. However if you don't you take away a right granted to so many others, while you pay the same taxes.

Reasons for voting decision: Both sides, in my opinion, gave equal arguments. However, pro had the BoP and did not fulfill it, so con gets arguments. Con also was the only one to provide sources.
