As a transhumanist, I feel that it is only appropriate that I argue for genetic engineering. I'm assuming you are talking about people and not plants from your use of the word 'mankind'.

Genetic engineering opens a new prospect of medical science up to us. Most modern medical science focuses on fixing ourselves when we are broken. With genetic engineering, we could fix our flaws permanently. We wouldn't have to stop there, either. We could IMPROVE ourselves.

As with any emerging technology, there are risks. However, fixing those problems is a regular part of technological progress. Any flaws will be worked out. We heavily test new medicines before they are released to the market for this reason - to dampen the blow of any initial flaws while working them out.

However, one argument against it would be the 'dehumanization' aspect. This is a mainly philosophical argument. Are we dehumanizing ourselves by pursuing our inner desires, which always trend towards overcoming the limitations imposed upon us by nature? I think we are not dehumanizing ourselves because of this. Genetic engineering is as dehumanizing as using multivitamins.

Another argument is if our nature will evolve beyond any need for violence. In other words, will we end up killing ourselves as heavily-modified supersoldiers? I believe Alfred Nobel puts it best:
"On the day that two army corps can mutually annihilate each other in a second, all civilized nations will surely recoil with horror and disband their troops."
