Germany was responsible for WW1 because of its actions leading to actions of other countries.

1 Russia's mobilization was a result of German pressure and German leaders wanted the Russians to mobilize so that they could blame Russia for the war.

Czar Nicholas II mobilized his troops to protect the country from its border with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Russia had supported Serbia's claims for independence and so needed to defend herself against Austria and her allies. However, the Germans pressured the Russians into mobilizing as well by using certain military and political actions. France saw through this ruse and tried to warn Russia before she mobilized to stop an all-out war. But, the message came too late. Therefore, Germany cannot blame Russia othe war because the actions of Germany forced Russia to mobilize to secure some form of pece.

2. The Anglo-German Naval Race was on because of stubborn german pride and the war monger in Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The Kaiser wanted to have the largest navy in the world to challenge Britain's navy. The Kaiser thought that if Britain had to challenge Germany it would losesupport from its colonies because it wouldn't have enough ships to supply the colonies with supplies or to get supplies from the colonies. This naval race led to extreme militarism and the war monger wanted to use the weapons that e had amassed.

First round is background, second round is just quotes from scholars...

Best of luck to the challenger!

Germany was not responsible for WW1 they just happened to cause it.The Nazi's planned to defeat most of Europe not the whole world therefore they did not plan to have the whole world join the battle. Also, Germany and the Nazi's are different things. Many people in that time wanted no war in the first place like, for instance, the Jews. Yes on most areas I'd agree that the Nazis did potentially cause WW1 but Germany? No.

My second argument is simple...
The Nazis were not involved in WW1 that was WW2...the azis did not cometopower until about 1936.

Okay true, so I dont know my WWs as well as you do.... :D But in any case no lone country is responsible for a war. Have you ever heard the phrase It takes two to argue? (Or something like that)

Yes, but Germany had to sign the Treaty, even if they didn't agree with the contents or with the signing in general. They lost, so they didn't really have a say in what they could or could not do.

Yes that is the view that most people take. However, there were other actions that caused tensions before the assassination. i do not disagree that the alliance system played a role, but germany did take severe actions before the assassination and therefore is responsible. P.S.-It says it in the Treaty of versailles...which germany signed...

Germany was not responsible for world war 1 Austro-Hungry was. German may have wanted a war but Austria started it when they invaded Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The alliance system then escalated the war bringing Russia, Germany, France and Britain into the conflict.

Also, sorry not to use actual evidence, but I felt I didn't need to. I could have quoted many texts including one by a very famous historian who specializes in WW1 german history.

I didnt say sparked WW1. The assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand did cause Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, but Germany did drag all of the other untries into the war when they hoped the fight would remain local.

Thanks for your comment!

It was not germany that sparked WW1. It was Austria Hungary and Syria. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a syrian man which caused a spark to start WW1. The 2 countries declared war and the system of allies caused a giant war instead of a small one

Reasons for voting decision: Arguments go to Pro, not by merit of their strength, but rather because Con confused WWI with WWII. A concession in the final round sealed the decision.

Reasons for voting decision: While I agree with Con in this, that Germany was not the cause of WWI, they didn't really argue the point. They instead began arguing about WWII. So...yeah. Pro kinda wins by default here.
