Global Warming . . . the word strikes fear into some people's hearts, to me, it's just another phase the earth goes through. I have invited screwsociety62 to debate with me on the issue "Global Warming is not an issue that needs to be dealt with in American society today".

For something that happens every once in awhile, it seems like everyone is making a big deal out of it. One things that I must say is that 30-40 years ago, they were making a big deal out of something called a 'Global Cooling'. And 30-40 years before that, scientists were saying the earth is getting extremely warm. Global Warming, Global Cooling, Global Warming, Global Cooling. Maybe it's just a constant phase, and not an issue that needs to be dealt with.

My beginning remains. Reply away. I must have 100 words for this to go through. I must have 100 words for this to go through.

Global Warming is indeed an issue that the human race has to pay attention to.
While it is true that global temperatures are rising and falling, it is also true that every time the temperatures rise, they rise to a higher level than what they once were. Sea levels are rising, and glaciers are retreating. The world IS slowly becoming hotter, and precautions by humans can indeed slow it.

It exists, but were not the cause. It seems to me that people are just accepting the "If we don't do something, we're all gonna die!" apocalyptic hysteria theory, just like eugenics and the "Silent Spring." Both have killed millions. I don't see why this hysteria won't kill more than half of the earth's population if we continue with this. But anyway, you have a good argument, Scyrone.

I'm not exactly sure who said global cooling was an issue at any point since the early 1800s towards the end of the "mini ice age", since that was the last time global temperatures dipped. They've been rising relatively ever since then. Global warming was still very much in scientific discussions going back to the 1960s because that was when the connection between carbon dioxide and warming was first established.

But as Kasrahalteth mentioned, there are two possibilities, either it does exist or it doesn't. If it doesn't, but we still come up with all kinds of environmentally friendly technology, then thats great. But unlike what Kasrahalteth said, the transition is not costly. The myth this whole time is that doing anything about global warming will be very damaging to our economy. Instead, as many companies are finding, there is a lot of money to be made by going green. It's a great marketing ploy and makes companies more competitive overseas, where everyone else with two brain cells recognizes that global warming is a huge issue that we need to do something about.

"Global Warming is not an issue that needs to be dealt with in American society today."

Rationale like that really strikes fear into my heart.

30-40 years ago, we were going on about 'Global Cooling' because that's what supposed to be happening right now. We already know how these heating/cooling cycles work and we peaked a while ago and should be headed toward another ice age. Obviously, the globe is not getting any cooler. Which is what's so worrisome.

And here's the best point to be made about doing something about global warming. There are two possibilities: Either global warming exists or it doesn't. Ignore scientific studies proving the former and flip a coin. Now if it doesn't exist and you reform energy guidelines and whatnot, you've hurt the world economy quite a lot, and you come up with a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. Which is cool, I guess. But still, economy.

But if global warming exists and we don't do anything, the world economy is absolutely decimated, cities end up under water, huge hurricanes become the norm, droughts, wildfires, food shortages, you name it.

The cost of not doing something far outweighs the cost of doing something when you didn't need to, and I assume you still want a planet around for the next generation unless you're extraordinarily selfish.
