Thank you for accepting this challenge, I would just like to say that I do not intend on bashing your beliefs for any reason, but I believe that global warming does not exist. in fact, there are many scientists who do not believe in global warming, 31,000 American scientists to be more accurate, so trying to say you have science on the side of global warming is clearly not as convincing as many people think. Al Gore, who is obviously a global warming fan, exagerratd the truth and lied 18 times in the movie an inconvenient truth, maybe even more. I just believe that global warming, if it is real, is definitely not a threat and was just thrown out of proportion by corrupt politicians. 31,000 American scientists to be more accurate, so trying to say you have science on the side of global warming is clearly not as convincing as many people think.
[Thank you for starting this debate] I am sure that what my opponent means by the topic is if global warming is human caused, and if it is happening too much. Global warming has occurred and will continue to occur throughout time. So I think my opponent believes that global warming is not a threat. I'd just like to start out by saying that I have never watched "An inconvenient truth" but I do need to get around to watching it. Anyways, back on topic: When we burn fossil fuels carbon dioxide is released. Carbon dioxide absorbs heat. All of this carbon dioxide does not pass through our atmosphere: certainly, some of it does, but most of it is trapped inside the atmosphere. Now, when too much carbon dioxide is present in the atmosphere, too much heat is therefore absorbed and trapped on the earth. Too much heat in cold places causes melting of glaciers, and causes flooding. Too much heat in hot places causes drought. So we must stop the cause of human-made global warming by stopping the burning of fossil fuels. And if we don't soon, the supply will run out anyway and we will be forced to depend on "green" ways to fuel our cars, etc; OR we will all starve/be flooded to death. |

The last sentence of your argument is off topic saying that we will run out of fossil fuels, that doesn't mean global warming is man made. Now, on the link to the chart, it shows that carbon dioxide isn't the cause of heat. You see that in some areas of the chart, the CO2 levels rise and the temperature drops, and visa versa. http://www.whole-systems.org.... This shows that the climate will always change. The earth has warmed, about .5 degrees Celsius in the last 200 years, but, the sun has also gone through changes, and I believe that the sun causes these alterations. The earth has warmed a little, but it doesn't match the amount of CO2 produced, in fact, as you saw on the link, to the graph, you saw that CO2 didn't change the temperature in some areas, and CO2 never is less or more potent, there fore the temperature would always have to be constantly changing with the CO2, and we see that it isn't. It is absurd to say that the glaciers are melting. 90% of the ice in the world is actually growing, which wouldn't happen if global warming was happening. It means that is some parts of the world like America it has grown in heat, but in the south pole it has gotten cooler. This means that it isn't "global" warming at all. Also in defense of your side the ice in MOVING rivers has shrunk in a lot of places, but approximately 90% of the ice in the world is not moving and is in places like the South Pole, thus showing that it isn't "global" warming and it is just a form of hysteria from the media.
To your argument of "90% of the ice in the world is actually growing" you do not provide a source. So how do I know if you are telling the truth? I on the other hand will provide you a source right now: http://www.sciencedaily.com... I would also like to say that : • Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades, according to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. • The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies. And the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1850. http://news.nationalgeographic.com... You can click on that link for more information. Furthermore the sun's life time is about 10 billion years. Differences in a couple hundred years are not noticeable to us: as you said, the increase has been .5 celsius, but, as I said, the rate is increasing. So, vote con. Thank you. |

Incidentally, further expanding the time scale on the temperature plot would show the earth had been cooling for the previous forty years or so. No chance of that happening. that would verge on honesty.
