We should NOT have "progressive" gun control in America. Any sort of infringement upon the rights of the common man to defend himself is a disgrace to the nation, and to the rights of man itself.

First off I would like to thank my opponent for setting this debate up and I look forward to the an open-minding and challenging debate.

I would like to define gun control as any limitation of the firearm manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use status quo. And obviously I affirm. I would also like to clarify that we are discussing the institution of gun-control in the U.S..

AT: I would also ask my opponent to elaborate on his/her argument. But, in response to my opponent's constructive, I would argue that the real disgrace is the 42,615 gun related injuries and the 10,737 gun related deaths, only 970 of being in self-defense (http://www.gunviolencearchive.org...). S/He claims that it is a basic right given to man to own a gun; however if this is infringing on basic human right to life then it is unjust.

Contention 1 (the only one I need) - gun control lowers homicide rates:
We can see how this will happen if we compare the effects of gun control in the city of Vancouver compared to Seattle, tow cities with similar demographics, size, and rates of assault. However twice as many people are killed in Seattle, the city where many more people own guns. We could also look at the DC, where after taking measures to increase gun control they saw a 25 percent drop in homicide rates (http://articles.sun-sentinel.com...). We can also look at gun control on an international level, the United States compared to developed, high income States, has a firearm homicide rate 19.5 times higher than the average, while 49 percent of citizens own guns, far above the average of high income developed States. The death of 14 - 25 year olds is 42.7 times higher than that of these States (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov...). Australia saw a decrease in homicide rates after putting in gun control (http://www.cnn.com...). Even the simple presence of a gun in a household during a household dispute makes it 3x more likely that someone will be killed. A gun is 43x more likely to murder someone you know or yourself than someone trying to hurt you.

Thank you and I await a response...
