HIV AIDS is a very dangerous disease that killed about 1.6 million people in the world last year(1). The Flu on the other hand only has hospitalized about 200,000 in the United States(3). But the main way that AIDS is transported is by having unprotected sex(2) as compared to the flu which is through the air(3). The most common way that AIDS is spread is by peoples stupidity and can be avoided by simply wearing a condom (that fits). So in short the Flu spreads way easier than AIDS and effects up to 20% of the United States population per year where as people who get diagnosed by AIDS each year in the US is so small that I could not find a number.

I feel that HIV/AIDS research needs to have a priority over the flu research because of how dangerous it is. But first to understand why HIV/AIDS need prioritized let’s first look at the Pathophysiology behind this disease.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is a retrovirus which means it uses an enzyme to translate the viruses RNA into double stranded DNA . Following the transition of RNA into DNA the virus uses another enzyme to inject the DNA into the host cell. The primary cellular targets cells for HIV are the following: CD4-positive Th cells, Macrophages, thymic cells, and neural cells. Basically the virus destroys the immune system, and potentially the central nervous system which includes the brain and spinal cord. The diagnosis of AIDS is not made until you CD4 count reach 200 (normal CD4 counts range from 500-1000)[1][2]. As the CD4 numbers go down the person becomes more and more susceptible to diseases and illness.

According to the CDC, HIV/AIDS is not even on the top 15 causes of death. So at this point you must be thinking I’m crazy for bringing that up but let’s identify some of the diseases on the list. Number one killer is heart disease at a whopping 191.4 per capita. Number five is Accidents (unintentional injuries) at 39.4 per capita. Number eight is influenza and pneumonia at 17.2 per capita. Number nine are kidney injuries (acute and chronic) at 14.7 per capita. Number ten is suicide at 12.3 per capita. Number 15 is pneumonitis due to solids or liquids at 5.8 per capita[3].

This leads me to my first argument that more people may die from HIV/AIDS than the flu. Now I am guessing you’re thinking to yourself “How can you argue that? You just said HIV/AIDS was not on the list.” Well as mentioned above as a person’s CD4 numbers drop they become susceptible to different illnesses and infection. Two of those infections are caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus. This illnesses lead to things such as strep throat. Now that is a miner disease however if not treat correctly the bacteria can get into the patient’s blood stream. Now as the blood goes through the heart some of the bacteria will land on one of the valves in the heart and grow more creating something called vegetation. Eventually this vegetation will break loose and act like a clot causing a heart attack, or cardiomyaopathy leading to congestive heart failure. So my point is some of the heart disease deaths can be related directly to the original HIV/AIDS infection[4].

Going with the cardiac problems associated with HIV/AIDS are renal problems. With the person having a heart attack or even if they are in congestive heart failure they are not pumping blood like they should be therefore the body needs to decrease blood flow to non vital organs in order to make sure the heart and brain has enough oxygen. One of the first organs involved are the kidneys. If they are not perfused it will lead to acute and chronic renal failure. Now I agree with you this is a long shot however as mentioned above a person with HIV/AIDS is susceptible to infections. If a person gets a urinary tract infection the bacteria can travel up the renal tubules and cause glomerulonephritis leading to acute kidney failure. Also as mentioned above untreated bacterial infection cause vegetation on the heart valves. If this vegetation breaks off and occludes the renal artery the kidney will necrosis causing acute kidney failure that will develop into chronic renal failure[5].

As AIDS goes on the patient can develop a condition called AIDS dementia. This is the same thing as regular dementia however its caused by AIDS. People with any kind of dementia are prone to accidents. So my point here is some of the accidents are directly related to HIV/AIDS[6]. Also going along with AIDS dementia is the pneumonitits due to solid or liquids. A person with dementia can sometimes have problems eating and drinking resulting in the person aspirating food or liquid into their lungs. Sp my point with this some of those deaths would not have happened without the original HIV/AIDS infection[7].

Obviously with a compromised immune system the person is more susceptible for the flu so some of those deaths could be the result of the original HIV/AIDS infection.

Moving on to my second point the flu has a vaccine. HIV doesn’t. I guess that is my entire point not much to elaborate on.

Point three the HIV virus is evolving and becoming resistant to medical treatment. If more research is not done the one day there will not even be a treatment for HIV let alone a cure[8].

To summarize my three arguments, there are more deaths due to HIV/AIDS than what people think, There is no vaccine for HIV/AID, and lastly the virus is evolving and the treatment is becoming less and less effective.

Flu research begins a year before the vaccine is made. the virus mutates every year. The CDC takes a gamble on which strains to start producing vaccines for. Sometimes they get it wrong. The reason why the Flue does not do more damage is because of the work done each year. Work that begins a year before it is passed around schools and nursing homes.
