Has new music destroyed the meaning of actually writing the song yourself?

I have always liked oldder rock from the 60s, 70s and 80s and I aloways feel that new music has no meaning, message or personallity. This I feel is mainly down to the lack of the artist writing the song. Anyway I was just wondering if others had the same opinion because I don't like new music at all really except the Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks.

Thank you for instigating this debate. Best of luck to you!

While it is inarguable that many musical artists of today do not write their own lyrics, this does not mean their songs are without substance. The singer themselves may not have poured their heart, soul and every fiber of their creative being into these lyrics, but another human being has. It may not be the sentiments of the artist themselves, but these lyrics do contain human emotion and feeling, and to write them off as lacking, as my competitor states, "meaning, message or personality" simply because they are not penned by the artist themselves is an untrue blanket statement.

A prime example of this is 'Wrecking Ball', Miley Cyrus' hit that has been played on radio stations across the country and globe alike. The lyrics, while not masterful poetry, are heartfelt and emotional. These lyrics were not penned by Cyrus. They were written by a team of five lyricists [1], but nonetheless pack an emotional punch, and tell a tale of heartbreak and pain. This goes to show that the meaning and personality of a song is hinged upon the quality of the lyrics themselves, not upon who put the pen to the paper and wrote them.

Though I wish this could have been a more thorough debate, I do want to thank Pro for starting the debate itself. The topic is both interesting and polarizing.

Agreed with Pro.

It's shameful and tasteless for so called "musicians" these days to not write their own lyrics and/or play their own instrument. They're not musicians at all.

The fact that people like Bieber or Miley Cyrus are famous only proves that the music business is all about business-not music. The major music labels are all about using "proven formulas" in their songs instead of creativity.

There will be always be true musicians and those that are there just to make a buck.
