This is a difficult and multi faceted debate. Id like to get a wide spectrum of opinions on this though, both from an industry/academic and overall social health prospective.

There is no doubt the pharmaceutical industry has made some remarkable scientific advances and does produce some important life-saving and vital disease treatment drugs. However, has the industry gone too far and become too pervasive in health care?

It seems there"s a drug for almost everything now. Anti-depressants are the most commonly prescribed drugs in the West. People routinely take pharmaceutical drugs for everything from a cold, to a headache, without a second thought about natural alternatives, or the long-term affects using pharmaceutical chemicals may have on their health. In other cultures, they rely more on traditional, natural approaches to health and treating illness.

Have we gone too far in the West? Are we now relying too much on science and our pharmaceutical industry and moving away from nature?

Are there vested interests at play here and are natural health alternatives not being given proper clinical testing? One example which suggests so is St John"s Wort (SJW) which is commonly prescribed in Germany for depression and shown consistently just as effective as many pharmaceutical anti-depressants for mild to moderate depression. Yet many other countries have either not carried out serious clinical trialling on SJW or just prefer pharmaceutical anti-depressants which cost a lot more.

When was the last time anyone went to a clinical Dr and they recommend a natural herbal remedy? Many peoples experience in the UK at least, seems be Dr"s automatically prescribing a pharmaceutical drug for many complaints if treatment is needed. Often no questions are asked about lifestyle or causal factors, there"s just a quick symptomatic solution offered in the form of a drug.

With many drugs having side-effects and affecting many biological processes, could this cause negative effects to human health in the longer term? Is there any evidence some pharmaceutical drugs may even cause gene mutation and diseases? Societies in the East that have healthier lifestyles and rely more on nature for health seem to suffer less from life-threatening diseases (cancer rates are far lower) generally speaking than those in the West.

Is the cost of the pharmaceutical industry more a drain on our economies, and should natural cheaper alternatives be given more consideration by governments and health authorities?

just look up saline doughnut on google and then tell me that the cosmetics industry hasn't gone too far. people chose to deform their faces and bodies to be "unique" or "different" but most of the time it is just weird. people have put glass disks in their cheeks, but for what reason, so we can see them chew with their mouth open while it is closed?

It seems that people in the west relies too much on various forms of drugs to keep healthy. We take supplements only to be "comfortable" with no illness. And other ideas like anti-aging also affected many people on their altitude toward drug. They think such drugs would pose no harm to the body. Actually not, recently I read an article about the harm of antioxidants on cancer progression. The real effect of antioxidants supplements may increase the rate of cancer progression( from an article published in BOC Sciences Blog). We should take care of drug and may approach health in a more natural way.

The ability, and having pried a drug that is needed for people to live over 300% the original price that recently happened all due to no real restrictions for them? Yes.
