The fact that the most powerful and influential countries around the world (US,Russia,China,U.K) have nuclear war heads, has created a stalemate between each other, this has prevented the outbreak of global war

The first-hand witnessing of the death and destruction during the atomic attack on Japan was the warning to all nations that total-annihilation would be a very possible outcome of global war today

as Albert Einstein said
"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

THUS the most destructive weapon created by man has also prevented world war 3 ....

Thus far there have been zero demonstrable instances of a war being conclusively avoided due to the nuclear deterrent. While it is likely that threat of nuclear retaliation does play a part in decisions of war, so far the opportunity to use nuclear weapons lies entirely in the hands of 'developed' countries with a largely westernized system of morality. As other countries, particularly in the middle east, begin to develop nuclear weapons we are unlikely to see such restraint.

While it may have been fine so far I don't see the ability to murder essentially limitless numbers of people as any kind of 'redemption'.
