Health care should be provided by the state. the government should pay for all health care expenses.

Con

When the state provides "free" healthcare, it inevitably has to "ration" care.

The fact of the matter is that people cannot have free and unlimited healthcare at no cost -- someone has to pay for it. If this is achieved through taxation, instead of by the consumer of the healthcare, then there is no incentive to economize in any way. Why not run every possible test for every possible ailment once a month? Once a week?

This is unacceptable, so all state-provided healthcare systems instead "ration" care. Otherwise, costs would quickly get out of hand. However, rationing is not a good distribution method either, and many sick people have to wait in long lines, etc. Other times, care is denied by the state -- this is way too much power for a government to have.

Finally, in the absence of private enterprise, the incentive to develop new cures is greatly hampered. Right now, pharma companies invest millions into research and development in the HOPE that they will get a return on their investment in the future. If government also took over R&D, then this would be just another opportunity for abuse. Big programs could go forward without much chance of success, because the people working on them would not care about future profitability. Free enterprise saves people's lives by providing a financial incentive for life-saving cures.

I agree with clsmooth. It would get out of hand to provide free and unlimited healthcare.

Yes, I understood the nature of this debate. If you look at my record, there are a few debates where I clearly defeated my opponent's logic and yet got clobbered in the votes. And there's another where I conceded defeat and yet won! But whatever. I debate for my own sake, and to reach the person I'm actually debating.

For the record I did not vote for myself in any of these debates. I've proven my point.

bsergent: well, you got your one vote here (not from me) to help make the case for the "people treat debates like polls when voting" debate you are having. I must say that I agree with you. I had a debate where my opponent conceded to me, in the open, without forfeit from time, and somehow we were still tied for some time after the debate. It's a problem that isn't going away, though, as far as I can tell. Interesting experiment.

clsmooth, good argument, of course.
