I see history as a very educational class, but it shouldn't count to our graduation because it isn't needed in most workforces. If you need to take it because you want to work in that field, that's great but it shouldn't affect your ability to get into college if you want to work in another field.

Thanks for an interesting topic. The burden of proof shall be on my opponent to show that history class should not be required for gradution.

My opponent argues: "but it shouldn't count to our graduation because it isn't needed in most workforces. If you need to take it because you want to work in that field, that's great but it shouldn't affect your ability to get into college if you want to work in another field."

Note the phrase "because it isn't needed in most workforces."

Let's put this into a formal argument.

P1: History isn't needed in most workforces.
C: History should not be required for gradutation.

We need to add another premise to make this a valid argument.

My opponent's argument formalized:
P1: History isn't needed in most workforces.
P2: Whatever isn't needed in most workforces should not be required for graduation.
C: History shouldn't be required for gradutation.

Pro hasn't offered any support for either of these premises. However, the second is obviously false.

What is the purpose of education?
Is the purpose of education to prepare us for a work force, or to produce well educated citizens? Clearly it is not the first. Highschool is a general education and production of intelligent citizens. For this reason, we don't learn trades in high school. Rather, the purpose of high school is to create well-rounded intelligent citizens who will go on to choose their trades.

What about history of your country?
If the government requires highschool because it wants intelligent citizens, shouldn't the history of the country be required? It seems that in order to be a good citizen, you ought to at least know the history of your country. Thus, history is needed for completion of highschool.

Over to my opponent.
