History is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the discovery, collection, organization and presentation of information about these events.
I do not believe that History is a great teacher. We may have come to know about various events but have we really learnt from them? We all know war is a wasteful enterprise but has this knowledge stopped nations from producing more war heads? Has it stopped us from fighting or getting ready for more fights?

As my opponent has so graciously pointed out, history has shown war to be a wasteful enterprise. However, just because a few failed to learn the lesson, doesn't meant it wasn't a great lesson to learn from.

History has taught us accountability, sanitation/health reform, proper science technique, and has led to great governmental reform.

History gives us the ability to have hindsight and learn from mistakes. Whether we choose to listen or not, is not the fault of the teacher.

First of all, I would like to define the term 'Teacher'. A teacher is an instructor or a tutor. But then anyone can instruct us but is he able to make an impact? Agreed, it depends on the student to learn. But as we all know some teachers make more impact on the minds of students than others and it is not necessarily the fault of students. So where is the fault? I feel the fault is with the teacher, otherwise 'History will not keep repeating itself.'

My opponent has set forth a new definition of teacher. Now, the teacher must have made an impact to be great.

Ask yourselves: Has the history of disease and development in new medicine made a great impact in our lives? Has the history of geography & science made a great impact on modern knowledge in our lives? Has the history & evolution of varies systems of government made a great impact on modern forms of government? The answers are all yes, history is a great teacher.

I never said that research is not being carried out to rectify problems faced by the society, again most of it being their own making (not learning from their past mistakes). Recently, china had its map altered by including certain regions of India and Vietnam as its own. This has started a diplomatic row between the countries. Is altering the map going to gain China extra territories? What is it looking for? Another wasteful war? Why History has not taught them from their past actions?

A very terse debate. Pro might have argued that history teaches about appeasement and other aspects of war, but it sufficed to show that some lessons of history were learn. It isn't always the teacher's fail when students fail to learn.

Reasons for voting decision: History is a great teacher if there are examples of lessons learned as a result. Pro gave examples that Con did not refute. Pro loses conduct for the forfeit.

Reasons for voting decision: conduct because pro ff. Pro gets arguments because con agreed to the resolution. A great teacher does not mean great student.
