I. Many gays are discouraged from joining the military. We are at a huge low in troop levels. In December 2006, The Army's chief of staff, Gen. Peter Schoomaker, told the House Armed Services Committee that the active-duty army was severely shorthanded, and would break unless the force was expanded by seven thousand more soldiers per year.

II. Gay soldiers would show homosexuals to individuals that have not never seen it before and it would ultimately lower hatred and homophobia.

III. According to the Urban Institute's Population Studies Center, there are one million gay and lesbian veterans. Over sixty-five thousand gays and lesbians currently serve on active and reserve duty. Gays would be able to express their orientation in the military. It is unfair that a person come back from a 6 month tour of duty and watch others kiss their lovers while they have to wait until they get home.

IV. Sexual orientation is irrelevant to military suitability.
[RAND Corporation, "Sexual Orientation and U.S. Military Personnel Policy: Options and Assessment" 321 (1993).]

V. Many troops actually know that their fellow soldiers are gay, which does not disrupt comraderie.
[Ibid]

VI. Many other nations allow gays to join the military. Let's also take the step into the next century. Those nations include Israel, Great Britain, and Canada.

VII. 79% of Americans are comfortable with homosexuals in the military.
[Gallup Poll, May 4–6, 2007, http:// www. pollingreport. com/ civil. htm.]

VIII. Gays serve openly in the CIA, NSA, FBI and DIA, TSA, Secret Service, DEA, and border patrol.

IX. Don't Ask Don't Tell is the only law that forces us not to tell the truth. And, often, lie. If you do not conceal your orientation, you are discharged.

X. Two to three gay or lesbian service members are discharged each day. These include medical personnel and linguists. In many cases, these skills are critical and in very short supply.
[Blue Ribbon Commission Report, "Financial Analysis of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell:" How much does the gay ban cost?" February 2006.]

XI. Homosexuality is natural and not a choice. There are occurences of homosexuality in animals and closed off societies. It is also thousands of years old.

XII. It is no human's job to judge others and their love.

(Matthew 7:1) "Do not judge so that you will not be judged.

Luke 6:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.

Luke 6:41 "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

Romans 14:10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.

Romans 14:13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this-- not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother's way.

I wish this debate had been taken throughout. Unfortunately, ny opponent looses the first two rounds and the debate. Now, it is impossible for me to respond to whatever position she has and this will not be a debate at all. It is unfortunate that this debate was thrown away.

I pretty much agree with Bill Hicks' view on homosexuals in the military - "Anyone dumb enough to want to be in the army should be allowed in." That says it all in my opinion.
