"When the public's right to know is threatened, and when the rights of free speech and free press are at risk, all of the other liberties we hold dear are endangered." Christopher Dodd, former U.S. Senator (Connecticut)

Is free speech and free press the most important civil liberty? Why or why not?

This is my first shot at online debate so I'm a bit shaky on my feet. It seems however (from observing the other already in voting debates) that the first round is reserved for my 'acceptance'.
Regardless, I welcome all tips and constructive criticism with open arms.

I accept my opponent's challenge.
I'm on the con side so I oppose the notion that free speech and free press is the most important of civil liberties.

Enough with the boring formalities, (I'll get to it in good time) let's have a mighty nice debate shall we?
