The iPhone's current layout is efficient and easy, but it could be made more efficient and easier. Part of Android's appeal is it's ability to customize its basic operations, apple's inability to let its users make their device more personal is harming the iPhone's overall appeal. Some apple users seek third parties to improve their own devices, this has resulted in nearly 14,051,500 apple products being jail broken.
I am unsure as to what you refer to when you say basic operations, but I will assume you mean skinning of android to customise the interface? Apple has a long history of giving it's customers a set experience, and avoiding contamination that comes with customisation. They do not want the brand image of premium software and devices to be compromised, as this is a large part of the selling point of Apple devices. There are a lot of bad android experiences of android devices due to the customisation that comes with it. It is difficult to compare the successfulness of Apple vs Android as Apple makes both the hardware and the software, whereas many different companies make android devices. An analogy might be to Microsoft vs Apple computers. The number 14 million should not be taken out of context of the 125 million iPhones sold in 2012z
