If the Burmese government does not want aid from other countries then those countries should stop trying. If the government wants there people to starve to death and die from diseases because they are afraid of people overthrowing their government then see if the people won't overthrow them.

I am interested in hearing a response because in school my social studies class just did a debate on this!

The question whether one should intervene in order to help in Myanmar can be reframed as a question whether international law has more validity than human rights. Or at least under which circumstances international law can be broken so that human rights are upheld. Now as the dictatorial regime of Myanmar is suppressing their citizens and letting them starve and die, it would be morally and legally wrong to let them have their say. The human rights of the Burmese people are to be defended against the will of their government. The actions of the Myanmar government can be interpreted as genocidal against their own people. In this case the UN permits the international community to intervene and save those suppressed and neglected by their own government.

this is too bad, I would have loved to see what arguments (and there surely are some) would you have up with.. Like this the score of this debate is not really interesting..

"Myanmar" is the name the generals gave the country.
Those within the country and outside of it, call it "Burma".

Biophil, I voted for you for that reason even though I think we should not meddle in other countries affairs. I didn't use to think that way until a few months ago. I have turned isolationist because of the reaction to President Bush and the Iraq war. Let the rest of the world slaughter each other who fricken cares as long as I have mine. That seems to be the political climate these days, It's easier to just go with the flow.

Even if you think pro is right, how could you vote for it, if there is not a single argument?!

No good deed goes unpunished, look what happened to President Bush when he freed 25,000,000 people from the grips of a brutal dictator. Outside interference should be spurned for any reason. Have we as a nation not learned our lesson. Let them rot, at least we or any other nation can't be blamed for meddling in other counties affairs.

Clemsongirl5353, I would like topoint out the fact that now the Burmese governemnt is accpeting foreign aid. This was due to constant pressure and negative reporting from the world. They realized that they could NOT solve this massive crisis by themselves and began to accept foreign aid. Therefore, we should not ever stop trying. The constant pressure was the cause of their recent acceptance of aid. Thank you.
