In this debate, pro will discuss reasons as to why we should respond to extraterrestrial life forms, and I will discuss reasons as to why we should not respond to extraterrestrial life. Pro will provide statements as to what we should say back to the alien life forms. (Brief)
I do not mind any form of debating, as long as your point is clear. Also, please no trolls. I would like this to be a productive debate.

Pro may begin stating reasons as to why we should respond to extraterrestrial life. This is mostly opinion based, since we don't really have much information regarding the topic. However feel free to read up on sites and provide evidence suggesting reasons as to why we should respond.

Thanks

Hello, this is my first debate on this site so good luck to me. This is one of those arguments that have a, "it depends," part of it. That is how well our intal greeting goes and if we can find anyway to translate what they respond with and if they use vocal communication either. It also depends on if it would be worth it or not to contact them. The thing is though is that us humans are so lonely. We seek others to fill our social needs whether it be through the Internet, a game, or face to face which is becoming a rare commodity in today's society. We are alone together. Back to the debate we have at hand, we humans want to meet people because it is how we are programmed. We are wired to meet and greet ourselves to others and keep us in a stable state of mind. There is a problem that we will and are running into, we are getting bored of other humans. We have all of our sci-fi's that fill our minds with evil aliens and the hero walking away and returning to his family as if nothing ever really happened or they remember about them and the equal is them attacking the planet. We also always see aliens as more technologically advanced then us. What are we going to do if we find extraterrestrial cavemen on an alien planet? Are we gonna shoot them? Will the be aggressive? Will they see us as gods? We don't know because we don't know them. So if we did it we would have to be lucky they are on the same tech foot as us to communicate had hope there is some sort of translation. All and all, we need to meet new things and people almost everyday or we will go crazy. That concludes my argument for the first round. Thank you. now for the con.

Thanks for accepting, pro. This is also my first debate, so this should be fun.
Now, I do not believe this is exactly an "It depends" type of thing. It would be either we respond or we don't, because we can't base our actions on the content of the message, because, well, it would most likely be a foreign message.
If we were to respond, what would we send? would we perhaps make ourselves look intelligent and send back a long equation or pi? That is however not our choice to make.
Yes, its true that we do want to meet other people, and its a survival instinct. But other intelligent life forms not originally from earth? Eh, that's debatable. which is why we are here right now!
One reason we wouldn't want to make ourselves known to exist to other intelligent life forms is because we don't know if they would want to help us, or kill us. As Stephen hawkings said, What if aliens would be like Columbus, and we would be like the "Indians"? It didn't turn out so well. Now that I said that, if we can't even get along with other humans, how will we do with other intelligent life forms?
I do not believe we are getting bored of other humans. When I hear that sentence, I think of just getting bored of friends. That is not true, unless I'm the only person with long lasting friends, which I highly doubt.
Okay, to your question of "Are aliens more technologically advanced than us?" question, I have a logical answer. If they can get to our planet they are clearly more technologically advanced than us well, because we can't even get humans to mars without getting a lethal dose of radiation. And if they can overpower us, they will see us as ants, not gods.
We will not get bored of humans. We will not go crazy. We will go crazy if we find out that aliens are here with a super nuke and are planning to destroy the earth tomorrow. There are over 7 billion people on this planet right now, and through your lifetime you cannot meet every single one of those people.
Now, all this could be avoided (Or at least the chance of aliens finding us would go down) if we simply didn't pick up the cosmic phone. Yes, we want to discover new things, but is it really worth it?

Here are a few questions for you:
  • What if some humans are taken as "Labrats?" Basically aliens would take a few humans to cut them open, experiment with them, etc
  • What if we anger the aliens? Will they send more aliens to earth to fight against the humans? Remember, they have way more advanced technology than us.
  • What if they bring different diseases that may not be so effective against aliens, but could wipe out the human race if we don't find a cure fast enough? (A disease that won't be effected by antibiotics or a vaccination couldn't be made because it is a foreign species, which was not created on earth)
Thank you, now for pro.

Thank you con. You put up a good argument. There also is always the possibility that we in the far, far future are we the ones to find the aliens. There is the possibility that we will be the Columbus and them being the "Indians". There is the possibility of us being the gods and them the filthy commoners. Think about what we would do in there place of them finding us. We could be asking those questions about ourselves. Natural human curiosity would snatch some lab rats and our natural aggressive human nature and natural racism to those not like us would make us want to be a Columbus. We would think that we would be better than them and we would keep them as the pets. Humans would bring even the common cold and wipe the whole species of the planet. If we would do it to them, than they would do it to us.
There is also the other thing. What if we find alien bodies, but they are not an intelligent being. It won't always be like the movies where they come out of nowhere, guns blazing and yelling in their alien tongue, "ERADICATE THE CARBON-LIFEFORMS!" Yet again, what if they are not intelligent. What would we do if we saw a space cow that doesn't need oxygen floating out of the window of the International Space Station. There we would suit up some astronauts and send it into our air-lock in some form of contamination tube. The scientist would probe it, cut it, and dissect it. While for 6 months then is only talking about this stupid space cow. We aren't talking about if they would come now, we are talking about if they would ever come whether or not they will come. What if they don't come? What if they never land a saucer on our planet? Even then in the future we would be working to abandon Earth our turn it into a utopia.
Think of the book and movie tie-in, The Host. They simply stole our bodies and saw that we were in distress and moved to fix it. They saw we had problems and they fixed it but didn't have there own bodies. They fixed our problems through us and save the gosh darn planet. So yes. If they did come we could ask them to help us with there advanced tech. Thank you.

I would like to remind you that this debate is not about us going to other planets, its about if aliens contact us, should we respond? Sure, in the future its possible for us to be the "Aliens" but its unlikely that we would wipe out the alien race. Just like we have vaccines and antibiotics, they probably have some type of medicine they could come up with.
Again, let me remind you, talking about non-intelligent life is off topic, since if they aren't intelligent they wouldn't be able to contact us. If I wasn't being clear, I mean like if aliens left us a message would we call back and leave them a message.
Your space cow living in a vacuum theory is very unlikely to happen. Of course its possible that life formed on other planets depend on say, nitrogen instead of oxygen and maybe nitrogen oxide as a waste product. But if we found some kind of space cow that can uh survive in a vacuum and can survive in extreme coldness, then it would definitely be a very big topic on the news. And well, I don't think it would exactly be called a "Stupid Cow" because we would learn a lot from this space cow!
If we don't come in contact with aliens, well then we don't really have to worry about aliens landing on our planet anytime soon.
and uh well life will just continue as it always has.
Now comparing a fiction movie to real life stuff is absolutely absurd if you ask me. That's like comparing "The giver" to the future. It happened in the movie, so it will happen in the future! That, as many would agree, is not true. We can not base some kind of prediction like the result of aliens coming earth, on a fictional movie. We don't know if aliens will find us as a threat and will wipe out all life on earth. We don't know if aliens will help us. We don't know what they would do, because its never happened before! And no, just because you ask mom nicely for a cookie from the cookie jar doesn't grantee she will say yes.

First is first, you never stated in the opening that we where only talking about intelligent life. Also in your opening statement did you never state that they would be the ones that came to us and just just said that if we ever do come in contact with an extraterrestrial life form. You never stated whether or not they are intelligent and that brings us back to the space cow. Secondly, you also stated that there is barely any evidence or supporting facts about this topic making completely useless as a debate. If you wanted opinions you would have gone to the opinions section and started it there you nub. The thing is the we know nothing about what could come at us from outer space. Let's take an example, what if a TARDIS fell from space and crashed next to the city of London? News cameras found the Doctor questioning where he was and millions and millions of Doctor Who fans are rushing towards him in their SUV's and Minivans. They would praise him and he would be on every talk show on the planet for the next five years. They would replace the man in the show with the real deal with everyone on earth is now a Doctor Who fan. The thing is that we will and there is no stopping that. If we find any scientific evidence towards an extraterrestrial being, there will be at least a million people around the world making their own alien communicators. There also the thing that the aliens send a message and no one responds? Will the extraterrestrials send down colonizers and be surprised to see a race flourishing? Will they see us as just primitive animals living in the ruins of buildings not built by them? Will they put us in farms?
This says in a nutshell that we must and will contact any extraterrestrial beings that set foot in our solar system. There is also the question, what if a human beamed down in center on New York?

And just like that, the debate becomes derailed with unrelated arguments and redirects.

I just was using that movie as an example of a possible outcome.
