Before I begin, I just wanted everyone to know that the topic of this debate is a slightly-altered version of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate topic of NFL National 2002.

Contention one: citizens oftentimes do things to themselves that aren't just. Take, for instance, suicide. A person is obviously killing themself, but both a social rule and internation laws state that murder is wrong. We need to take into account what is more important, the morality of the entire society/state or respecting this person's choice. Since

Contention two: society is, in a sense, protecting itself. The plea of insanity is one such case. There are many laws that state if someone pleads insane, in place of going to jail, they must instead go to a mental health facility. People who plead insane are obviously guilty of criminal activity; society is doing nothing more than ensuring that the person in question doesn't do anything that might jeopardize the safety/health of both themself and the people around them.

It's 2am and I need coffee or sleep so I'm just gonna cut it here... =___=

I've waited till this round to try and give the PRO some time to come back up... but apparently they can't.

C1) Murder is wrong, I'll agree, but I don't see why Suicide should be wrong. To the extent of my knowledge, a person is justified to do anything to him or herself as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others, and this stands regardless of national or international laws. Also, I don't see where this conflicts, "morality of the entire society/state or respecting this person's choice". Why does allowing people to commit horrendous acts to themselves lead to the downfall of morality to the entire state?

Besides, it's not as if people don't suicide JUST BECAUSE there's a law that says "suicide is illegal". Which doesn't really make sense in the first place; giving a person that's gonna suicide the death penalty. Same results, except the second requires the state to give an elegant last dinner and then some thousand dollars on the chemicals for lethal injection.

C2) "People who plead insane are obviously guilty of criminal activity" - O rly. Funny, I've pleaded insane (not in a court), but I don't remember shoplifting or anything. There is no warrant for this. I do agree that they should be put in a mental facility though.

While I agree to some points of the PRO's case, I vehemently oppose some other parts. I negate on the following premise: In society, NOT ALL laws which protect citizens from themselves are justified.
