Con

He's definitely a hero. He only kills in self-defense(legal) and he turns villains in to be dealt with by authorities.

I thank my opponent for this interesting debate. To clear up some definitions:

Vigilante - Any person who takes the law into his or her own hands, as by avenging a crime. [http://dictionary.reference.com...]

Police - An organized civil force for maintaining order, preventing and detecting crime, and enforcing the laws. [http://dictionary.reference.com...]

Criminal - A person guilty or convicted of a crime. [http://dictionary.reference.com...]

===ARGUMENT===

According to the definition, a vigilante takes the law into their own hands. Batman does this. Batman does not work on behalf of the police, and incapacitates criminals and hands them over the police. Ergo, he is a vigilante

===REBUTTAL===

"He's definitely a hero. He only kills in self-defense(legal) and he turns villains in to be dealt with by authorities."

>> He may be a hero, but that doesn't contradict that he is a vigilante. He may be a heroic vigilante, but it still implies he's a vigilante.

I await my opponents response.

Con

If he took the law into his own hands, why then does he not simply kill the perpetrators instead of turning them in to the police to be dealt with as he does?

I thank my opponent for his speedy response.

===REBUTTAL===

"If he took the law into his own hands, why then does he not simply kill the perpetrators instead of turning them in to the police to be dealt with as he does?"

>> He has taken the law into his own hands by assaulting them. He allows the police to prosecute them, but he intervenes in the legal system without authorisation, making him a vigilante.

My opponent raises a good point. If he is ,in fact, a vigilante, Why do we call him and other superheroes "heroes" if they too are vigilantes?

===REBUTTAL===

"My opponent raises a good point. If he is ,in fact, a vigilante, Why do we call him and other superheroes "heroes" if they too are vigilantes?"

>> Because, they are heroes. They do good. They're also vigilantes. It doesn't matter what we call them, they are vigilantes. Being a hero and a vigilante isn't contradictory. By nature, they tend to go well with each other.

I have refuted all my opponents points. He has refuted none of mine. I urge a PRO-vote.

Batman is not a vigilante. In the law it is perfectly legal for someone to arrest an individual. This is called a private persons arrest. Batman is a lawful citizen who happens to come across criminals, uses force to detain them, and then hands them over to the police. However, Batman does not punish the criminals. He does not have a jail in his batcave that he stores criminals and does not kill. In fact in the rare instances he does kill it is perfectly justified as necessary force. This is not equal of all superheros. Superman, who uses the phantom zone to store mass murderers such as zod, would be more of a vigilante then batman because he punishes criminals.

Batman doesn't kill even in self defense. If you look it up killing is the one thing he won't do.

Taking the law into one's hands means not just chasing and catching criminals but dispensing punishment. A person who takes down the license plate number of fleeing bank robber is not a vigilante, he is merely assisting the police. "Vigilante justice" always involves punishment not prescribed by law and carried out by the legal system. There is no crime involved in tracking down a criminal; private citizens do this legally all the time by hiring private detectives and having their own security departments (in a store or other business).

Batman has been slandered and should sue!

The question isn't whether or not these heroes are vigilantes, but rather whether or not their vigilantism is justified. A more fleshed out discussion on this topic can be found in my debate with sherlockmethod: http://www.Debate.org...

@ Eggleston: Lol. Micheal Moore attempted to make a citizens arrest of the board of AIG.

Sorry to be patronising but I think Con should have looked up the definition of vigilante.

Batman, besides being a paedophile homosexual (no single man should be allowed to adopt a teenage boy and dress him up in women's' tights) is an enemy of the ordinary citizen.

Where was he when the vile capitalist pig, Bernie Madoff, ripped off decent, hardworking investors to the tune of $50 billion? Nowhere. He was too busy cracking down on poor old arctic birds that had been forced to live in the sewers because decadent Westerners had destroyed their Antarctic habitats!
