Mkay, the meaning of a sport is something that requires athlethlic ability, and a competition.

Well if you think about, cheerleaders throw people up in the air! Last time I checked, lots of people could NOT hold, and throw people up in the air.

Now about the competition thing. Well, I mean you have to be stupid to not know that there is competition cheerleading.

And this is my 1st opening argument!

Alright, well yes you throw people up in the air but little kids can do that dancers do that and i think that dancing is a sport but cheerleading is not if you think about all the other sports then they are nothing like them all cheerleaders do is try to pep up crowds yes you have to work hard but only in competition is there a others. If you compare cheer to basketball then pretty much the only thing they have in common is there is a coach and a team.

they have judges not a reff. your not getting points or making goals unless there is a judge. Thats the only way.

Mkay Then how is dance a sport and cheerleading not? We work out, we run. We do more than dancers. O and how do you say that golf is a sport and cheerleading is not? In golf, you stand around and hit a little ball with a stick. Now in cheerleading you yell, do stunts, work out, and you have to be strong. In golf you don't need to be strong...at all. You have to lift a stick that is only like 3 pounds. In baceball, yeah you do diffrent things. But still you meet all the same requirements. So there for, cheerleadin is a sport!

I teach in Georgia. Georgia considers cheerleading a sport. I suppose it's a Title IX thing, but still -- cheerleading a sport? How stupid.

Cheerleaders like to argue about it almost as much as I do.

Yes, it's a sport. We go to competitions.

No, it's not a sport. Debate is a competition. Is debate a sport? No. Neither is cheerleading.

But we're athletes. We practice and work hard.

Actors practice and work hard. Is acting a sport? No. Neither is cheerleading.

Can you go to a football game to watch a sport, and if you happen to notice the cheerleaders, actually end up watching 2 sports at once? I don't think so.

The cheerleaders say But the competitions are the sport part. The games are just what we do to practice.

That's nice. So I guess it's OK for the football team to scrimmage on the sidelines of a cheerleading competition?

Girls can be catty sometimes. Who hasn't heard a bunch of cheerleaders standing

Well I understand there all male cheeleaders, but when some one is talking about cheerleaders the image that comes to mind is not "neck-and-neck" competitions but rather girls in skimpy outfits on the sidelines cheering boys on to victory. I just think even giving cheerleading a little credibilty as a copetitive sport does more harm than good.

Left wing mormon, I agree... but there are male cheerleaders, in cheer compititions. In the cheerleading like for football, they ARE usually all girls, but sometimes some guys. However I believe they are debating on compitional cheerleading, where it usually tries to be equal. Besides, isn't football sexist? Wouldn't a girl making a football team be headline news??? I have NEVER seen a girl playing football. Even when it is not called a boys football team.
Therefore there is already a very sexist, and popular sport, what would one more hurt?

I do not agree that it is a sport though.

Cheer leading is sexist and I believe any credibility to this sorry excuse for a "sport" does more harm than good to or soceity.

Here's my opinion on it. When you do competition cheerleading it is a sport. When you're not doing competition cheerleading it is not a sport. Simple as that. Both debaters were equal in my eyes and I agree somewhat with both their viewpoints so for me it is a no-vote.

Would you count figure skating as a sport? Figure skaters are measured by judges' opinion, and yet their craft is an integral part of the Olympics - the very definition of sport. Boxers who do not score a KO or a TKO in their matches are also measured by judges' opinion. Are you brave enough to tell Mike Tyson that his is not a sport?

Pro not only argued a stronger case, she actually has a valid point; one that I had honestly not considered before.

Con doesn't seem to say anything but "nuh uh" where as pro, at least occasionally, gave reasons for her view, even though she is wrong. Cheerleading, while being far more athletic than many sports, is not a sport. A sport requires some manner of objective scoring. Cheerleading competitions rely only upon subjective scoring. In other words, there is no way to measure skill in cheer leading other than judge opinion, in order to be a sport there must be some actual measurement of skill. I.E. measurable distance run, specific number of times a task is completed (ball put into hoop, ball moved across field, etc). So pro was incorrect, but she gets my vote anyway because she actually HAD an argument.
