Pop music is not real music. Music is an art and represents yourself. This means it needs to take time and dedication to create. Modern music is not real music because it is created with little or no effort. It has no meaning in it because most of the sounds created in it are generated by computers and sound editing systems. Classical music, however, takes time and dedication to create. Composers spend many years just to create a beautifully written peace of classical music. A pop song can be created in a very short amount of time. Singing in pop music should not be real music either because it is very manipulated and auto tuned. Anybody can create a pop song if they had the money for editing equipment. Only great composers, however, can create a beautifully written piece of music. So, in conclusion, I believe pop music is not real music because they are computer generated sounds and are created as thoroughly and thoughtfully as classical music. For these reasons, I believe that modern music is changing today's children, and that people today should learn to appreciate real music.

Con says that pop music is created with no real effort. He says unlike classical music, pop does not take time or dedication to create and therefore has no meaning. Con argues that using computers or other technology takes away from the artistic merit of pop music. Con also writes that it could take years to write good classical music, but pop music can be composed very fast. As such he states pop music is not "real" music. I negate.

First it is important to note that there is a wide range of pop music. Pop artists span across different genres, as pop itself comes from various other types of music including jazz, orchestra and even classical [A]. Con cannot say that pop music is made with "no real effort" because that is not specific or true of every pop artist and song. Many pop artists put a lot of time and effort into their work.

According to musicologists, characteristics of pop music include

- an aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology
- an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than formal "artistic" qualities
- an emphasis on recording, production, and technology, over live performance
- a tendency to reflect existing trends rather than progressive developments
- much pop music is intended to encourage dancing, or it uses dance-oriented beats or rhythms [B].

Focusing on craftsmanship, production or particular rhythm is not inferior to other music aims, just different. Art is subjective and people's taste in music varies along with their need and utility. For instance if one wants to do a certain type of dance, pop music would be more useful and enjoyable to them than classical. Music and art exists to suit different tastes, preferences and aims. Pop music is not random but has specific goals and it's own sense of meaning.

The length of time it takes to create something is not indicative of its value. Mozart was known to write masterpieces at the last minute in a very short amount of time [C]. Plus pop music itself can be traced back to the 1700s with obvious classical origins as well as opera [D].

Pop has had many legends and icons including The Beatles, Michael Jackson and The Rolling Stones. These individuals changed pop music and influenced other artists and genres as a whole. For example, The Beatles were among the first to create concept albums, revolutionize music videos, changed the way stadium concert venues were played and experimented with new studio and recording techniques [E]. They changed the way guitars were used in music and recording [F]. And they had a huge impact on pop culture in addition to pop music [G].

Con claims that pop music is stupid and void of intellect, but that is not true even regarding some of the best known pop artists of today. For example Lady Gaga is one of the top selling pop artists these last few years, known for her catchy songs and pop caricature. However she is also a classically trained musician, and has been known to incorporate not only classical but other genres into her pop [H]. She is not to be over simplified just because of her popularity or persona. She is not a frivolous artist, she is a legitimate artist. Adele is another example of a pop artist who has an amazing voice and incredible talent that incorporates jazz, soul and blues into her pop music.

Even music that seems simple to some serves a purpose or value to someone else. Others enjoy music for different occasions. To some people lyrics and complexity is not as important or enjoyable as rhythm or playfulness. Pop is a broad genre that has a lot of interesting and good artists as well as bad, like all other genres. Art is subjective.
