It is not safe.

My opponent has taken an indefenislbe position: skydiving is not safe. He has not defined his terms nor the parameters of the debate, so we are left with a scenario where I must only prove that skydiving can be safe. If I can do that, I have affirmed the resolution that skydiving can be, in principle safe.

The intention of skydiving is not to mindlessly jump out of a plane. Surely you will plummet to your downfall. The intention of skydiving is to strap on a parachute whcih will activate whilst you are in the air, propelling you safely to the ground. There are even classes that are offered to propsective skydivers and people who will assist people so that they are safe while undergoing what appears to be a dangerous task.

Here's my argument in the form of a modus tollens syllogism:

A: If a person can, in principle, survive after having skydived, it is safe.
B: People have skydived and can live to tell the tale.
C: Skydiving must be safe.

The resolution is affirmed.

Where's your proof?

I'd like to point out that my opponent has not only dropped my arguments, but provided none of us his own.

As for proof, the U.S. Parachute Association has documented this over the past few decades (http://www.uspa.org...).

Here are a few things they have reported:

1. In 2013, out of 3.2 million skydiving jumps, only 24 were fatal. This amounts to .0075 fatalities per 1000 jumps, which is a historic low.

2. Tandem Skydivng has an even better record -- .003 fatalities per 1000 jumps over the past decade.

3. According to the National Safety Counci, you're more likely to die by getting stung by lightning or stung by a bee than by skydiving.

4. The average amount of deaths per annum has been dropping over the past few decades -- from 42.5 in the 1970s to 22.3 over the past few years.

Basically, safety precautions are taken recularly, and every March there is a USPA Safety Day.

But let me be clear, though. Both of us hold a burden of proof in this debate: I must prove -- as I have -- that skydiving can be safe. My opponent must prove that it is not safe and cannot be safe. Thus his burder is much higher than mine. And in light of these data I have presented, he can no longer fulfill his burden. Therefore I highly advise you to vote Pro.
